What is going on with this GPU Fan

Brand new 3070 (ZOTAC RTX 3070 TWIN EDGE) that I managed to bag at MSRP last week and I noticed that one of the fans (GPU Fan 2) sometimes shows an insane spike in RPM. It shoots up into the millions! My PC is still on the ground so it's obviously not spinning that fast and I've tried HWINFO and MSI Afterburner and both show the same thing, so I don't think it's down to the software.

What is going on here?

It's just a sensor acting goofy. The mobo in my server does a similar thing, random fan headers will report fans running around 16,000RPM, or it'll report them running at like 3RPM, even on headers that don't have any fans installed. Really nothing to put much thought into.

That's a HWInfo bug, on my side I have CPU temp report sometimes to 132C, always this same figure 🙂

Check the fan curve in MSI Afterburnet when you go to Settings > Fan.

 

Maybe you have a stupid factory curve as on my Gigabyte card where it goes fanless up to 50*C and then it goes 90% RPM at 51*C so it constantly turns on and off on idle, I had to change the fancurve entirely.

 

Altough in your case its probably a sensor bug.

Can't two monitoring services running at the same time cause conflicts and errors in reporting? I've always heard this but don't know if it's true. Something to try maybe

There is likely a failing sensor or a loose connection, but there is little to no risk there. Not worth the hassle of an RMA, though you might just ping them with it and get it on the record.

The way the sensor reads the speed is by sending the mainboard a voltage and the firmware assumes that all the resistors etc. are correctly calibrated and installed. In this case there is likely a place in the circuit where there is a bit of excess resistance which causes an increased voltage (volts = current * resistance) which the firmware runs through its conversion equation and comes out with absolute nonsense errors.

What is going on here? 

HWInfo64 and Afterburner can use the same system hooks and can be configured to work together, so no surprise they show similar values. As others have said this is most likely a buggy sensor and an RMA is probably over the top for it. If you are really concerned then check the fan manually, does it stop with the other/s, does it seem to spin at similar speeds along the curve, if so, you are good. A small mirror and some vibrant/ dayglow tape can help here.

This happens sometimes when fan is allowed to stop when its cool enough. Just ignore it or remove it from HWINFO. It's not really important. And if it was actually spinning that fast you'd not need a program to know.

Maybe you have a stupid factory curve as on my Gigabyte card where it goes fanless up to 50*C and then it goes 90% RPM at 51*C so it constantly turns on and off on idle, I had to change the fancurve entirely.

 

Altough in your case its probably a sensor bug.

I tried the fan curve and saw similar behavior. There is a pattern where that jump to 1million RPM only happens when the fan is about to shut off. I guess it's just the sensor because the fan seems pretty normal otherwise.

Cheers for the explanation! RMA would indeed be a hassle but I'm trying to get it replaced from the place where I bought the card or else it will keep playing with my head.

Just a bit of an update. I managed to get my GPU replaced from the store itself and the funny part is, even the new one has the exact same issue! My friend, who also bought the same GPU has this issue which leads me to believe every Zotac Twin Edge card has this problem.
