3080 12gb or 3080 Ti for 4k gaming?

Combat Stackz

I'm currently caught between buying the 3080 12gb or 3080 Ti for 4k gaming in ultra high settings.

The 3080 Ti is about $130 more but I'm not sure if it's worth it or not.

Honestly I'd wait. 4K performance is likely to take a big jump with the next generation.

What about buying one of the above and just selling it whenever the next gen drops?

I see people on YouTube running their games at ultra settings. At least that's what the titles say. I'm a tech noob so I don't have the slightest clue.

I do know that it looks cool and I want whatever allows me to run games on ultra high settings. (Except for the 3090)

My 3080Ti pushes about 100 FPS at 4k high on modern games.

This is how you lose a lot of money lol.

People were selling RTX 2080ti's (1200$ card) for 400$, because the new RTX 3070 was as fast for 549€.

Has happened every generation, you will have to sell it for many times less than you bought it for, because the new cards will be faster.

Current rumors is that this gen will be as big a jump as last one, so rtx4070 will be as fast as rtx3080ti.

So if you buy one now for 1k$, expect to sell it secondhand for about 400-500$.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Not sure it'll happen that much now, look at the RTX2060s they still sell for close, if not above, their original price

I've bought a 2060S in 2019 for ca 430EUR can't find any new below 500 and used are around 350...

That is a really bad example. Low end cards always hold their value better, especially now that AMD and Nvidia both havent released an actually good lowend card in 5 years, rx570 for 165€ is still not beaten in either performance or price.

You were talking about buying a 3080ti, now look at the used prices of 2080ti and 1080ti.

High end cards are inherently overpriced, so when a new xx70 or xx60ti card is as fast as an old card, they do lose a lot of value.

was 1200€, now:

image.thumb.png.45ac43a83277e0049caea93143e3b9c7.png

was 800€, now:

A high end 3080 ti like a Strix OC, FTW3 Ultra, Suprim or the equivalent will will do about the same frames as a 3090.

GPU models are not the same so a entry level 3080 ti like my EVGA XC3 Ultra can game like a 3080 12gb and the top tier cards like my FTW3 Ultra are about 10 frames faster.

This is what it looks like with an i9 9900k.

Shadow of the tomb Raider

SOTTR highest preset                                   1080p      1440p        4k.

ASUS Strix 3080(370/450 watts)                   167fps      144fps      87fps

EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti(350/366 watts)        168fps      143fps      83fps

EVGA FTW3 Ultra(400/450 watts)                 169fps      154fps      96fps

Horizon Zero Dawn

HZD at Ultra                                                  1080p      1440p         4k.

ASUS Strix 3080(370/450 watts)                   134fps      118fps       80fps

EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti(350/366 watts)        147fps      128fps      79fps

EVGA FTW3 Ultra(400/450 watts)                 155fps      138fps      88fps

These are at ultra but with the settings I like it is easy to get over 100 with The FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti.

Have a 3080Ti and gaming at 4K have yet to play a game that is unplayable at ultra (AA usually at low or medium because you don't see any difference at 4K between those and high or ultra) settings. Every game I have except for cyberbug2077 pushes more than 60FPS.

I'm a noob to all of this so I'm a bit confused as to which is better. I see that your fps with the EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti performed the worst at 4k, and with mines being the just the 3080 12gb, I'm assumung it would be even worse. Maybe I'm incorrect here. I'm not sure if I should cancel my order and get a different brand like ASUS.

A Strix would be faster but it may not be fast enough to make a difference.

The 3 cards I have in the post played the same in games.

The FTW3 Ultra is more fun for overclocking but the extra 50 watts was hard to manage.

If I put the FTW3 in the case that the XC3 is in, the temps under load would go from 73c to 80c.  I would have to either undervolt or recase.

That is why I kept XC3 Ultra. Is a better daily driver.

3080 12GB is pretty close to 3080 Ti performance, only really a few frames below. I'd not spend $130 more for the Ti personally. That's said though, what is the price? Is it actually a good price for the 3080 12GB?

Woot had Zotac 3090's for $999 the other week, I should have grabbed one.  Is the 3090TI that much better?

No hijack meant, sorry.

Difference really is much higher power limit for the 3090 Ti, also, no VRAM on the rear of the card, so don't have to worry so much about overheating VRAM on it like you did with the 3090. Also, higher clocked VRAM at 21Gbps vs 19.5 Gbps on the 3090.

I'm not a fan of the vram layout on a lot of cards at this point I'd rather have a 4080 than a 3090ti but I already have a 3080 (10GB) I can hold off with.  It is kinda annoying I've started hitting more vram limitations after switching to 4k though...

I'm not sure if I should cancel my order and get a different brand like ASUS.

none of the current cards will meet your expectations, especially if you want to play in ultra.

the 3090ti is like 10% fast for 20% more power draw iirc, i saw the 3090 on woot too, but appearantly a decent amount of them were doa, i also consider the 24gb vram to be a detriment long term for gaming as the bottom ram  overheats, very few models solved the issue. I'm hoping the 24/48gb spec leak of the 4090 means the 24gb next gen models won't have double sided vram.

If you don't need the extra vram, then imho the 3080ti is functionally the same with better temps, ive seen them as low as 900usd, putting the 999 3090 on woot in perspective.
