ASUS RT-AX82U 5400 Dual Band problem

minilegend

Ive just got the ASUS RT-AX82U 5400 Dual Band from amazon today and ive just realised it does not have a dsl port and the isp router does not have a modem mode. Atm i get around 15 ms ping and 50 down and 20 up i believe in my area they are going to go fiber optic and i was woundering what would the best option be as i do not know if there would be a bottle neck if i get a modem and use the router with dsl or do i just send it back and get a router with dsl build in. many thanks

If that's consistent, it's pretty good for DSL.

I'm not sure DSL modems are sold as standalone units anymore. Maybe directly from the TelCo. They tend to be sold as DSL gateways (modem + router + AP + switch). I wouldn't invest that much into a DSL setup if you're expecting fiber on the way.

What problems were you having with the existing setup that made you think a replacement would be significantly better? Your speeds and latency are very good.

Run the ASUS router in AP mode. This way you dont need to send the router back. It can handle the WiFi. When you upgrade to Fiber you will have a router that you know will work.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

If your ISP gives you fiber straight to the home, they will provide a media converter or an internet gateway device that can accept the fiber input and output to ethernet/RJ45.

What ports on the wall do you have? RJ45 with ethernet runs can be connected up to any router or switch.

at the moment the router only has a dsl connector and a ethernet cable 30m going to my gaming pc and mining rig the isp provided has a dsl connector and a wan connector with 4 rj45 ports

I'd do as suggested, use the ASUS in AP mode until fibre comes.  If this is BT/Openreach rather than one of the alt-nets, fibre will come with a media converter you will just plug the new router into once switched back into router mode.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

I know the feeling, I was watching them like a hawk for 2 years when they announced my exchange, finally got it a few weeks back.

Cross your fingers and toes for good measure. At least you have the possibility of Fiber. I live in Poor peopleville USA and I expect we will never have Fiber here. We will be stock with Shitcast for all of eternity.
