RX 6800 or TX 3070

Xa3phod

I see videos on Youtube comparing the 3070 to the 6700, but I thought the 6800 was the direct comparison. I feel hesitant to get the 3070 because it only has 8GB or ram, which will affect its long-term viability.

I thought the 6800 was a 1440p card, but I see people saying the 6700 is. I want 120FPS in new AAA games, I don't care much about Ray Tracing. Is a 3060TI or 6700XT enough for 120Hz 1440p gaming? (on a 3900X).

Or do I need a 6800 or 3070? I don't plan on moving to 4K in the next couple years at least. Right now I am using a RTX 2070 and I feel like its lagging a lot in multiplayer games like Planetside2, StarWars Battlegrounds, and Halo Infinite barely gets over 60FPS and usually less than that.

What do you think? I wanted to wait for the new 4000 series, but it looks like even if it came out, I probably wouldn't get a chance to get one till next year.

Thanks

8 GB of vram wont be the limiting factor in the use of the card honestly. Other issues will arise more then the buffer, although some games can cause it, if you dont see yourself playing those games its not an issue. the 6700xt is the comparion cause price, the 6800XT was supposed to compete with a 3080.

IT all comes down to how much you are willing to spend. Either will do fine, i prefer Nvidia cause i am just use to using shadowplay settings and such and NVENC, but for just pure gaming either will do just fine.

Either being 6800 and 3070? or 3060TI  and 6700XT?

The RX 6800 is more a direct comparison to the 3070 Ti, the direct comparison to the 3070 is the 6750 XT.

If you've already got a 2070, you want to go for a 3070+, the 6700 XT/3060 Ti is better than the 2070, but it's not that much of an upgrade.

The VRAM amount isn't a big deal on both, 8GB doesn't start getting pushed until you start playing at 4K, so I would just look at the actual game performance now. It really comes down to the pricing for which one makes more sense. Personally with how the pricing works out, the 6800 makes a bit more sense IMO, but there are arguments to be made either way.

Meanwhile FH5 (IIRC RDR2 is another example) at 1080p. 8G is straight up borderline for 1440p and even in 1080p in boundary pushing AAA games.

I was in the same boat as you, I thought with the consoles having tons of VRAM as well as a pretty good GPU, purchasing the RTX 3070 now would not be a wise decision.

So instead of getting a new RTX 3070, I opted with a second RX 6800 XT, for not much more, like literally less than $40-$60 difference, at least I got a decent 4K card for 1440p gaming, that will future proof a bit.

I just ordered the RX6800XT for $669 on Amazon. Should last me a two to three years. Got my RTX2070 in Feburary of 2019 and it served me well. Hope this does as well.
