Battle of the Prime Day ultrawides (I can buy only one!)

I have a 27" LG 4K monitor. It's about 5 years old. It's starting to discolor in the top left corner, and that's spreading. It's time to give it to my mother.

 

I'm looking at two 3440x1440 ultrawide options to replace it:

Both end up being about the same price after Prime Day deals on the Dell. I'm hesitant to bite the bullet on a VA panel because of their reputation for ghosting and blur, but it looks like this Dell might actually have one of the best VA panels out there. Curved vs. flat, meh. The main thing I use my computer for these days is work, but I do some light gaming on titles like Skyrim, Planet Coaster, open-world type of stuff generally. I have a GTX 1070 and will be upgrading to a 6600 XT so...yeah. No 165Hz ultra-details 1440p ultrawide gaming happening here. But I still do want the colors to be sharp, great definition, minimal blur, etc. If I'm going to pay this damn much for a monitor instead of just grabbing a $200 4K IPS...it better blow my mind.

 

Any thoughts on which of the two? I'm leaning Dell, but could be swayed either way.

I've got a VA and love it, couldn't be happier.  It's been a LONG time since VA was the suck.

 

I'd go Dell, for the curve.  Ultrawides have to be curved for me.  Period.

 

I work on the MSI Optix MAG341Cq and I game on the AOC AGON 35 at home.

Definitely not HP, it is not curved and most HP display ain't good. 

 

For this two, I will pick Dell. 

 

New VA is a good as IPS except viewing angle, so if you seldom shall screen, then VA is not an issue. You can check review from RTINGS or Hardware Unboxed for details review. 

 

Currently in market, Samsung Odyssey G7, G8 and G9 series (not G5 or lower) even manage to eliminate the dark smearing issue. I own Neo G9 and no complain on it display output where previously all my monitor was IPS.

Flat could actually be preferable for someone who needs to use their display for both games and productivity.

Another vote for the curved one. I daily drive one curved ultrawide on my desktop and another for work, and I formerly had a flat ultrawide for about a week before I couldn't stand it. Even though they're only like 2 inches farther away, the edges of a flat ultrawide screen feel awkwardly distant imo.

Mutli Monitor setups. Maybe its fine if you have multiple of the same monitor, but having multiple curved monitors that have different levels of curve is just as, if not more annoying then different DPI.
Also curved monitors don't do too well in portrait if you ask me.

For 21:9 or 32:9 aspect ratio. Curved did much better beside given immersive on gaming, it also make easier view on productivty. In such long screen curved did not have visible distortion. Ultrawide and Super Ultrawide is not design and not suitable to put as Portrait mode as it will be way too tall to view on top content. 

 

For 16:9 aspect ratio, then flat is the better option as this kind of aspect ratio will feel short in curved. Also 16:9 can use as Portrait mode nicely which flat did better in this case. 

 

For multiple monitor setup, it is always better pick same resolution, height in size and also same curved angle.

I couldn't sell myself on the idea of paying $400 for a monitor. So I did the rational thing.

 

I bought a kayak instead.

 

 

Thanks everyone lol. I still need to replace my monitor, but I don't need to replace it with a high-end curved gaming ultrawide when 90% of what I do with it is a combination of work, YouTube and Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. I'll just grab a halfway decent 4K IPS like I have now if I see one come up during Prime Day. Or after, I suppose. And if it takes me a little while longer to find the right deal, that's fine. I'll be out on the water. You know, kayaking. Because I bought a kayak.

The chances of someone wanting to portrait a large format UW monitor are pretty slim. Kind of grasping at very small straws with subsets of niche groups.

UW sure but I'm talking curved in general, and you were the one who said: "Curved is never an issue for productivty. "

I assumed it would have been common sense that it was in relation to the question being discussed.
