Older 144hz monitor and newer gpu

T0MMEN

So i currently have an older monitor, it is 144hz. But from my understanding it can only do 144hz with the DVI cable. The monitor only has 1 hdmi and 1 DVI output. Currently i have a gtx 980 and it has a DVI output, so thats fine. But recently the gpu has acted up a bit. So im thinking ill need an upgrade soon. Do i need an active displayport too DVI adapter? And what is the best kind? A quick google search and i found an adapter for 50$, at that point i can add an extra 100$ and just buy a newer 144hz monitor. What to do?

i9-9900k 5.0ghz, 16gb Corsair 3600mhz, Asrock phantom itx z390 Mobo, RTX 3060ti, 1TB+1TB Western digital NVME, InWin A1, Noctua NH-U12S

The model of the monitor is important on this one:  for example I have a 144hz monitor from 2013.  It’s a Korean brand called crossover.  It MUST use a true analog video card, so the latest gpu it can work with is a 9xx family card. It also won’t work with win10 without a special driver.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I had a similar situation with an early gen Benq esports display: 1080p 144Hz over dual link DVI, 1080p60 over HDMI. In the end I sold it. If you decide to replace display you can recover some cost that way.

I don't have experience with active adapters but it sounds rather messy.

From what i understand i cant use hdmi to get 144hz, and the only active adapter costs more than a new 144hz display.... so yeah

Yep.  It sucks.  It also might not even work.
