Daggerfall Unity Special GOG Cut FREE on GOG

Paul Rudd

Per-pixel lighting and high-res textures are the most prominent of the enhancements that stick out. It looks like the old version uses a fake bloom effect that utilized transparent textures to simulate the effect. This was the way to do it before you had programmable pixel shaders for full-screen effects. (I'd have to see it in motion to know for sure, but it looks quite mild here). In the newer version, it looks like a pretty standard, modern-ish bloom effect.

Also, though the low res screenshots don't do a great job of showing it, there's also bump mapping in effect, which also indicates the use of multitexturing.

I bet that this game is old enough where a ray tracer could be utilized to good effect. Could probably even have shadows for most of the objects, sans characters.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…
