LG Overclocked Their TVs to Compete

Plouffe

LG’s G2 is out and it’s brighter than ever, but is it worth buying over last year’s G1 or this year’s onslaught of QD OLED? Is the Brightness Booster enough to keep WOLED in the fight?

You guys should use thermal cameras when testing these, I wanna see how hot they get. Sitting in front of one of these on a summer night is like a mid-day at the beach.

To be fair, a lot of LED screens should have a layer of aluminium to sink away some of the heat more efficiently. It would though add a bit of weight and cost, but extending the lifetime of the product before burn-in starts is a rather important thing to ensure that these displays don't end up as ewaste as quickly.

Though, I am curious to how much cooler the panel is when running at the same brightness. (we can estimate increased burn in time by the normal rule of thumb that everything ages twice as fast for every additional 10 C in temperature. Ie, if it is 25 C cooler, it takes 5.66 times longer for it to age by the same amount.)

My old B9s are bright enough for me and they can hurt without Windows in dark mod using HDR. So my new OLED is a C1 for $1,100.

I will get the newer tech when it is about the same price.

Here's what the movie looks like on a CRT

See the source image

Spoiler

because the movie is dark and the black levels on CRTs are deep so you can't see anything

Been using LG C2 42" OLED for over 2 months now as a PC monitor and zero burn in, works amazingly well.

Ironically my GPU is a 1070 Ti so I can only do 60hz/fps @ 4K resolution due to hdmi version limitation.

One day i'll upgrade the GPU..

One day i'll upgrade the GPU..

It took about 4900 hours for it to be noticeable on my B9 and it was the Chrome header that burnt in.

After that I used it only for gaming and it did not get worse.

I am replacing it with a C1 this week and it will go back to doing what caused the burn in in the first place and it will be replaced next year with a C2.

Time will tell how much longer these newer OLEDs will last but I would be happy with 5 years.

1. I'm glad we're at the point of having awesome stuff.
2. I think we're at the point where people should be discussing room treatment MORE than the IQ differences between two decent TVs.

For what it's worth, burn-in concerns kept me from giving the C1 a try. I'm using what's basically Samsung's last good LCD.

With OLED and Pixel Shifting becoming a thing, could we see the return of Overscan areas?

  • 4 weeks later...

Lol at linus saying the tvs look identical when watching the batman...of course they look identical. the batman's hdr grade is so dull it doesn't even reach past 450 nits. he would never be able to see a difference while watching that movie! not to mention the lifted black floor...
