Thoughts on PostHog?

CPotter

They're an open-source product analytics software, here's a link to their site: https://posthog.com/

Has anyone here heard of them, or used them before? Let us know! As usual, we appreciate any and all feedback.

It looks good, but considering it's data harvesting nature there are privacy concerns...

Tracking technologies

We may use third party tracking services, but we don’t use these services to track you individually or collect your personally identifiable-information. We may use these services to collect information about how the Website performs and how users navigate through and use the Website so we can monitor and improve our content and Website performance.

Third party tracking services gather certain simple, non-personally identifying information over time, such as your IP address, browser type, internet service provider, referring and exit pages, timestamp, and similar data about your use of the Website. We do not link this information to any of your personal information such as your user name.

They say it's non identifiable but they fingerprint the device you use and track your activity, otherwise why would they need an IP address, browser type, and the internet service provider for tracking?

And they cited those under "Tracking technologies"...

Some clarifications are needed:

Are the analytics collected anonymously and without personally identifiable information?

And do they share that personally identifiable information with others?

@CPotter did you give this a spin? How’d it go?

The team ended up giving it a go! Their representative had this response when I asked about the privacy concerns:

"We don't actually use any third party tracking technologies, only PostHog - it's against our brand really. To be honest, this text in our policy is leftover boilerplate from when we first created a privacy policy and needs changing, as we don’t share any identifiable data with anyone. We’ve resisted bringing in any tools or processes which require this (e.g. Google Tag Manager), even if it’s meant going slower and developing our own tools to do the job."
