Streaming woes

I dual PC stream on twitch using slobs. Dedicated stream rig is a ryzen 3 3200g 16 gb ram and an El Gato hd60 pro. I stream at 1080p and after some tweaking found that a bitrate of 6000 makes for the best quality/stability for my hardware. This set up has been working fine for about a year. All of a sudden a few months ago I have been having an issue where randomly (every stream) anywhere from 30 minutes in to 2 hours in my stream will disconnect and I have to restart everything and lose all viewership. I thought perhaps it was an upload speed issue as I only had 10mbps but I upgraded to 30mbps with my isp. My current internet gets about 900 mbps down and 29 mbps up. I have tried tweaking pretty much every setting in slobs and their customer service was no help whatsoever.  I'm kind of at my wits end and have no idea what else to do to try to fix this. I just hard reset my streaming rig but I doubt that'll even help. As a father of four I can't really justify spending money on a new streaming pc

Im gonna assume there was a windows update and or something else updated and messed up something in settings. You should def check to see if its being dropped (hence something potentially to do with Active time) or if its a specific cause like the System had an issue and spits out an error in Event viewer.

 

The fact that you are getting so ripped off with your internet is saddening to me, I really wish that ISP will suffer the consequences. To Artificially nerf upload when they dont need to is just silly.

 

Are you making any sort of money from streaming? Because if you arent making any money nor does it look like you will be, i can def say its not worth investing a ton into a system JUST for it to be a 2ndary stream pc.

To test if it's the router/modem or your ISP, a simple test would be to use another network connection. 

 

An easy way would be to use internet on your phone. You could try getting a phone card with internet access (and a provider that allows tethering/hot spots) and setting your internet for your computer (connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable, then enable tethering through USB. Do a test stream, even if you have to set the bitrate lower (depends on your phone's internet plan).

Basically, you want to see if this test stream also drops you between 30m and 2 hours just like with your network connection. 

If it does drop you, then it's a problem with your computer or with the software. Or it could be a problem with Twitch... if you use same bitrate of 6 mbps, maybe try lowering to 5.5 mbps and try again.

If it doesn't drop you then most likely it's your ISP or your hardware and I suggest asking your ISP to replace your router/modem. 

 

If hardware issue...

The router / modem may have to be replaced.  It could be some internal memory or something in the modem develops faults after a period of time of sustained traffic. 

The power supply of your router / modem could be flaky, and become erratic after some time. When you're streaming you're doing consistent upload so the router/modem whatever consumes slightly more power than idle during that time, and it could be the power supply heats more during that period and at some point it could "crash"

Cable internet is asymmetric like that ... has to do with how the channels are joined together and all that. I have  500 mbps download , 25 mbps upload and I pay around 10.5$ a month for it and it works great for me, super stable, no complaints. 

 

With the current modems they supply I think the maximum possible would be around 1 gbps download, 160 mbps upload, but they'd probably have to drop a number of TV channels to do that.

 

My phone's plan is around 6$ a month and comes with 30 GB of Internet included (and pay for more) at unlimited speed (whatever 4G/LTE the phone can do, I can often download at around 8 MB/s)

I had been having issues with my twitch stream cutting out and I have to restart it. I investigated it more. It cuts out at 2hrs 4 minutes every time. I streamed from a different computer and same issue. 2hrs 4minutes. I thought it might be a slobs bug so I streamed via obs. Cut out at 2 hrs 4 minutes. I have more than enough internet speed. Gb down and 30 mbps up. I used to have wave broadband (bought out and became astound) . This issue started shortly after they took over. Do ISPs have the capability to throttle you down after a certain amount of time to save bandwidth? Or is there some setting somewhere I can tweak? Because it's the same time frame everytime. All that makes sense to me is my ISP disconnecting me after two hours of streaming or some internet saving setting being turned on.

Could be data six or time.  Some buffer or other fills up and bang.  This is the kind of thing logs are for.
