Since i am planning on buying a 3080 and not realy decide on a variant to buy. there is quite a big gab in the prices from 960€ PalitGaming Pro LHR to 1229€ Geforce AORUS MASTER LHR. Currently i am favoring MSI SUPRIM X LHR 10gb for 1140€ (12gb version cost 1350€).
After checking variuos sites i couldnt really find any good information on which is good and which i should avoid since all of them list other cards as better than the others. any remomendations would be welcomed.

Go to https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/ and look up the power limits of the cards.

PalitGaming Pro    320 watts stock

AORUS MASTER  370 watts

 SUPRIM X            370 watts.

I would avoid the PalitGaming Pro.

Also the is a good source.

I’ve seen people do it.  The statement also implies that the 12gb card is actually more useful because it has more vram but at the same time nope.  I am left confused by this.

I bought a 3080 just to test this and it had no problem with vanilla games at 4k ultra.

It did not do as well with my modded games that use more vram.

To give you an idea how well it did here are a few games with benches.

The 3080 is a Strix(370 watts) and 3080 tis are an EVGA XC3 Ultra(350 watts) and a FTW3 Ultra(400 watts). All using an i9 9900k.

Horizon Zero Dawn on ultra

                                       4k

Strix 3080                      80fps

XC3 Ultra 3080 ti           79fps

FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti        88fps

Shodow of the Tomb Raider highest preset

                                       4k

Strix 3080                       87fps

XC3 Ultra 3080 ti            83fps

FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti         96fps

Assassins Creed Odyssey on ultra

                                        4k

Strix 3080                      64fps

XC3 Ultra 3080 ti           69fps

FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti        72fps

A high end 3080 10gb performs about the same at 4k as a budget 3080 ti 12gbs.

A 3080 is realistically not able to drive 4K anyways, at least not with the textures needed to consume a shitload of vram.  I always felt the 12GB was meant to be some half-assed way of justifying the scalper MSRP.  "oh look we gave you 2GB more VRAM you won't use anyways so you feel OK with paying $1400 for a $700 card".

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Well i am not planning on using 4k just Ultrawide 1440p more than something around a 5% increase in FPS i couldnt find but some talked about 12gb would be much better since nvidia has 16gb without stating why that should be the case.

Wide enough 1440p is the same as 4k.  Or even more.  It’s all about pixel count.

1440p uw is the same as 4k on ampere, amd might be better if you are willing, i wouldnt consider current gen as 4k 120fps card, maybe the 3090ti with a 12700k/5800x3d (still falls short imho)

3080 gets 90-100fps on 1440p uw with some optimization, would not pay more than 50usd for the 2gb extra ram.

It will vary by game, but it Sounds like the way to make that go is buy a 120 because it’s the only thing higher than 75, and then lock the frame rate at 90fps.  It’s enough (barely) to make frames invisible, at least for many.  Not going to get the (imho rather minor) bennies in PvP shooters one gets from really high frame rates, but one can’t have everything.

Good choice.

MSI has done really well with keeping vram temps down in the 30 series.

I have 3 MSI Gaming X Trios and would have gotten Supremes if they were available.
