Unable to power my monitor + charge my device using USB Type C port

downloaderfan

Hi All,

I have a BenQ EW3270U monitor to which I've connected ThinkPad E490 i7 version laptop via type c to type c cable (DP over type c). The thinkpad only has 1 type c port, which is used primarily for charging using it's power adapter. But when connected to the monitor, the charging does not occur. Why? The monitor came with a 16amp plug, but since I didn't have a 16amp socket, I bought to 16 amp to 6 amp converter. Could this be the reason? Or does the thinkpad lack something which prevents this?

That monitor does not seem to support charging an external device.

Could be that the power profiles it supports are too all too low for the laptop to consider charging from.

Could it be because I connected it to a 6 amp socket and not 16 amp?

Nope. The monitor draws a max of 76W which is about 0.6 amp.

That also means that even if the monitor supported power delivery it's probably only able to deliver 20-30W to an external device and from what I can see your laptop expects a 45 or 65W power adapter.
