He probably means that the TV is capable of 4k 120hz, but only with HDMI 2.1 cable, no displayport.

So with the HDMI 2.0 GPU he has, he could only do 4k 60hz, and so he asks, if there is a possibility of dropping the res, to get access to that sweet 120hz.

 

But now, to finally answer the question, if you enable game optimizer setting on the TV, you should be able to do 1440p or 1080p 120hz, even with the HDMI 2.0 connection.

If bad image quality doesn't bother you and you don't need HDR, you can force 4k 120hz 8bit 4:2:0 in the Nvidia control panel, but i would rather have 1440p and 10bit.
