hi, i'm thinking about buying a cpu and a mobo from amazon, but i've always had doubt about how carefully they handle "fragile" items.

has anybody bought something electronic that arrived damaged or broken?

i know any damage could be factory deficiencies, but also could be mishandled during delivery.

thanks.

I have received just one item that was damaged in shipping in all the times I've purchased from Amazon.

I only purchase from Amazon or any reputable sellers fulfilled by Amazon, so it was a pretty simple and painless process to get a new item sent out for me. Buying products from "Fulfilled by Amazon" sellers is a no brainer.

You are basically on your own when you buy from a non-fulfilled third party.

That's the one thing Amazon has going for them is their customer service. As they won't package anything safely. Are you ordering something collectible? They will go out of their way to make sure it arrives with the case/box damaged. It's just not what they are for. That being said, I've ordered All sorts of PC stuff from them. It's arrived in tact despite how the packaging / box looks sometimes. I primarily only use sold by Amazon. The worst experience I've had was opening a WD 14 TB Gold drive and finding a 4 TB Gold drive (it was new). It was no problem, they returned it without issue. I ordered replacement drives from NewEgg.

I've never had any issues with any computer parts ordered from Amazon.  I had to return a low profile CPU cooler once because it had a bad bearing.  Totally easy return process.

Sold by Amazon. Best.

Fulfilled by Amazon. Still great.

Third party seller and shipper. No more of a gamble than eBay packaging.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Deppends on region. In US where Amazon does it all the way, you probably get much different experience on shipping than with EU where Amazon only handles their own warehouse and local logistics companies the rest. As example, most of the stuff I order from Amazon.de uses either DHL or local postal service on final delivery. Yes, I do get some mangled packages from time to time, but nothing that has been damaged in shipping.

Sold by Amazon is the keyword. Sold by someone else than Amazon, you are not dealing with Amazon, but that third party. Thats all I can say as I don't buy over €100 stuff from Amazon. Not worth with hassle to send stuff to Germany/Poland (warehouse locations) for warranty. Oh, and incase you didn't catch already, I only have experience with EU and UK Amazon. Not those branches in NA.

darn, i wish they had the same standards globally.

with starlink in outer space, people still have to worry about if the label of "fragile" means something to the delivery industry..... accidents do happen yet, but it's different when your parcel shows up with a footprint on the side of the box (i saw this picture somewhere, could be a fake).

CPU and motherboard will not be labeled "fragile" since they are not. You would need to drive over CPU package with something to cause damage, it will easily take the "normal beating" it gets in any handling center (I've briefly worked in one). Same goes with mobo that doesn't have any big, out sticking parts. Something like monitor would be quite different since it has large surface that can get defects from ever small stress.

If you want more security, pick more expensive shipping option.

there is difference in carefulness in different shipping options other than just delivery speed?

More expensive options use bigger shipping companies that operate in your area. At least in theory, they take better care of products as thats one thing you are paying them for. With higher priced items, they might even have insurance for any damage caused. I would recommend reading delivery terms to check to be sure.

What I know for sure is that getting "fragile" label is extra service here (local postal service, maybe others too).

I'm in Canada and I haven't had issues with Amazon for damaged packages. I haven't bought too many PC parts from them CPU, RAM, Hard drive hot swap bays and they all came undamaged. They're packaged well enough to survive a trip. In fact I've bought quite a bit from Amazon and I've never had to return something because it arrived damaged.

But stuff like PC parts I would only buy if sold by Amazon as I really don't trust 3rd party sellers for that kind of stuff.

i have bought ssd and ram, but nothing bigger or heavier. i'm sure accidents do happen. all delivery services have accidentally dropped packages. probably even when they deliver to retail stores. my worry is probably irrational.
