Here's an interesting albeit serious counter point:

You claim our "user data" is so damn valuable to these companies and they are hell bent on getting to know what we think.

Why is it then that these same companies go out of their way to police our online activity, openly CENSOR user opinion and aggressively moderate user comments on the various social media platforms??? Yahoo no longer allows commenting on their articles, YT disabled the dislike counter and numerous online retailers not only moderate reviews on their websites but only publish positive reviews on their products. Heck, even on YT I've come across more than one channel where commenting is simply turned off, and others where comments disappear after being posted or edited.

Are we still even living in a democratic society, or are we just calling it that while knowingly and quietly adopting the bad traits of communism... and being silenced in the process??? Censorship has NO PLACE in a free society!!! You either HAVE freedom of opinion or you don't - there's no in-between!!! Perhaps more critical here is that we do not need somebody in authority to decide for us what it is we are allowed to say and determine who can speak. No single person or even group of people should be exercising that level of power, moreover determining who can do what. If I have an opinion I should be allowed to say it regardless of what that may be, but don't force down my throat somebody else's viewpoint while at the same time selectively silencing the opposition.

Then you have the security aspect collecting people's personal information. How many instances have there been already when sensitive personally identifiable information these companies were collecting got hacked resulting in accounts being compromised and login/password details being released??? It doesn't matter how careful a user is if the company responsible for handling that data is careless. Google's services have become so intertwined that it's difficult to separate things like payment/login/email information. Changing just one is a headache, having to change them all because ONE got compromised and resulted in the rest being sabotaged is no fun. Responsibility becomes a moot point, more so when these companies get off with just a slap on the wrist from the regulatory bodies when users may have suffered serious and direct financial loss or otherwise. At the end of the day I have better things to do with my time than deal with class action litigation and throw $$$ at an attorney if my name/address shows up in a database tied to illicit activity.

So no, if these big social media giants are not interested in what it is I have to say then what is their real purpose? If what I really think doesn't interest them then what exactly are they after? Is there a way to even determine who sees this data if those who are collecting it are just an intermediary? Who do you hold accountable for security when the regulatory bodies set up for that fail spectacularly? I for one value my freedom of opinion, freedom of expression AND personal security, but as soon as you take that away we can no longer talk about democracy, freedom and liberty - your society becomes no different than the darkest socialist regime.

Fines are stupid if you want some behavior to stop, since everything with a cost will be calculated.
