m2 - Heatsink?

Go to solution Solved by WereCat,

Not really necessary unless you do a ton of sustained writes.

Is a heatsink highly recommended for the following SSD?

I'm just curious if I will see a massive reduction in performance if it becomes too hot.

I do some light game development and gaming, so I don't think I would be putting the drive under a great workload.

The real reason is that it's a Gen3 drive with a very slow controller, so it just flat out won't get hot enough to matter. It's more of an issue with Gen4 drives, particularly those that actually hit maximum target speeds of around 7000MB/s.

Okay! Good to know for the future. If I was looking at upgrading to a Gen4 drive, what drive and heatsink would you recommend? $100-$200.

WD SN850 1TB is ~$180 with a heatsink. Extremely solid drive these days.
