My 4TB hard drive thinks it's a 2TB drive, suggestions to fix or idea's why?

RazenGear

As the title states one of my 4TB drives only registers 2TB and I have no clue why. I have already tried to reformat it and change it from MBR to GPT but none of these things seems to solve the problem.

I'll post a picture of the drive label and the information on the drive given to my by Seatools, the same information and results were given by CrystalDiskInfo.

Any help finding out what is going wrong here is greatly appreciated.

Was this drive previously being detected as a 4TB drive?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

What controller are you using to connect it? Not all SAS controllers can handle >2TB

A dell perc h200 updated to the latest firmware, it's inside a Dell R710.

The drive shows the 4k Native protocol..

4k native sector support is a feature of the latest generation PERC9 controllers(H730). No previous PERCs support 4Kn. The specification sheet lists 4Kn if it is supported List of PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) types for Dell EMC systems | Dell US your H200 isn;t on there..

Yes it supports 4TB drives.. but not 4TB 4K Native drives..

You might be able to re-flash the H200 to IT mode.. where you essentially remove the RAID capabilities..

then have the drive in GTP mode.. then create a volume on it ..

This sounds very promising, how would I go about doing this?

but before you do this.. let's see if you did not make a mistake in Disk Management..

Doing that right now.
I didn't even 4Kn was a thing or what it was for, however if I can make it can be made to work like I need it to be I'll be more than happy since I got the drive for a very good price.

Yes I just did but it's size didn't change.

then see if you can convert the H200 - but little chance it works.. I guess you'd need to have a 4k compatible controller.... (which is probably why the drive was so cheap)

I'll give it a try, is there a list with controllers that are 4k compatible?
And yes I guess this explains how it was only 40 EUR...

essentially the x30 range from Dell (see list before) ... or any current SAS controller model.. but then you'd have to make sure it fits in a 710

check

Just watched that video and someone is selling one of the SAS 2308 controllers which should be able to handle the 4Kn drive for about 30EUR, I'll most likely buy that and end up using it.

My original plan for this drive was to be used in my R410 which is supposed to end up running TrueNAS as my backup server for my R720 (I made a typo earlier saying it was a R710) and the SAS 2308 should fit into it just fine.

Thanks for all the help everyone, when I get everything running I'll post an update here.
