i9 9900K Outdated?

I'm curious on how many people are still using this chip. I also got 32gbs and 3090 rtx. As for games go, no problem as of yet with 2k res and max graphics. However, I noticed the new Stalker 2 game that is coming out next year, it's suggesting i7 9700k being their recommended settings. If it's time to upgrade the CPU, Ram and motherboard. What CPU should I be going with now?

A 9900k is still very top end…. No need to upgrade yet. Remember, you have more MHz and double the threads of a 9700k.

You aren't going to have any issues running any game with those components, surely?

Until very recently I was using a 9900k for gaming and workstation tasks. It's still a very solid performer and upgrading only for gaming isn't worth it. It will still be good for quite a while. If I wasn't doing 3D modeling or 4K rendering and was only using my rig for gaming I would have kept it. I upgraded to a 12700k(12c 20t) and while it did give me a 15+ average fps boost at 1440p max settings in most titles a few still run about the same, it destroys the 9900k for rendering out projects and multicore/thread workloads however. If you are only using it for gaming I wouldn't upgrade.

I would say the 9900k is still a top notch cpu. Sure some cpu are faster if you are playing at 1080p with a rtx 3090 and even then it isn't significant enough to really recommend upgrading unless you have some other use case other than gaming that could use extra cores. As for 1440p I would say the performance difference is negligible. I would wait until ddr5 becomes cheaper and some serious improvements in cpus happen. Right now both Intel and amd are constantly improving so I would say wait until you can get a significant upgrade rather than get a underwhelming upgrade.

I appreciate all the help. I was just concerned if the i9 9900k had to be retired so early. I play all my games on 2k with max graphics. Forza 5 being 1 of them. No issues. Just when I saw Stalker 2 coming in April of next year recommending i7 9700k... It had me a little worried on how that CPU compares to my i9 9900k. Again thanks everyone. I'll wait then 🙂

Why are you running 2k on a 3090? This is a troll post, right?

What's wrong with that? While very powerful, even a 3090 can't do high FPS at max settings at 4k in most modern games. You end up with a 60fps experience, or even lower if you turn on RT. 1440p is a good balance of higher resolution than 1080p while still allowing for eye candy and with a high refresh rate experience.

There's nothing wrong with it, but in the vast majority of games, a 3090 will easily give very playable 4k max.

Usually you wait for the software first...and try it.

With decent HW already I mean...

No point letting anxiety drive a purchase you didn't need to worry about.

Sure, games do get quite demanding with certain settings and instances in certain levels...

But id wait... for all you know it could be GPU bound on a 6core12thread chip.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Because I don't own a 4k monitor? Care to donate one?

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded from a 9900K to a 12600K. The only difference I’ve really noticed is that the 12600K runs a lot cooler than the 9900K did.
I play at 3440x1440p AAA games at the highest settings possible to achieve around 100 FPS so I am GPU bound most of the time. So why did I upgrade then? Well first I got a really good deal on the 12600K and a Z690 motherboard and was able to sell my existing Z390 and 9900K for a decent price. Secondly I just fancied an upgrade.
So I’d say that you’ll probably be able to get a couple more years out of your 9900K for gaming unless you think that it is really holding you back (or you just fancy an upgrade for the sake of it).

Well I mean I have money to replace the cpu, motherboard and ram, but do I want too? Not really lol. If the hardware is still fine for a few more years. I'll rather wait. I assume the 3090 will help out. Until the cpu just isn't fast enough anymore, then I'll replace it at that point.

Well I think you’ve answered your own question. If you are still happy with the performance of your 9900K then stick with it for now. After all, there is always something newer, faster and shinier around the corner isn’t there?

I still have an i7 5930k with a gtx 970 card in one of my computers and it still plays any game or program I throw at it just fine. Your CPU is far from outdated in my opinion.

I have tested my i9 9900k with a 3080 ti at 1080p, 1440p and 4k. Only at 1080p is it falling behind my newer CPUs.  At 4k they all do about the same frames.

To give you an idea my i9 9900k uses an EVGA XC3 Ultra 3080 ti.  At 1440p this is what it does against a Ryzen 5800x with the same GPU.

With Shadow of the Tomb Raider bench the i9 does 143fps average. The 5800x does 160fps.

With Horizon Zero Dawn the i9 does 128fps average. The 5800x does 129fps.

With Assassin's Creed Odyssey the i9 does 90fps average. The 5800x does 93fps.

My MSI Gaming X Trio 3090 with an i9 10900k does slightly better but no upgrade.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider = 164fps

Horizon Zero Dawn = 142fps

Assassin's Creed Odyssey = 94fps

1080p is a different story.

With SOTTR

i9 9900k(3080 ti) = 168fps

5800x(3080 ti)    = 183fps

i9 10900k(3090) = 192fps

With a high end 3080 ti(FTW3 Ultra) my 5900x does the best frames at 203fps so in another league than the i9 9900k.  At 1440p it does the same frames as the 5800x.

The i9 12900k may be an upgrade for the i9 9900k but the Ryzen's 5000s and the 11th gen Intel's & older are not unless you are a 1080p gamer.
