M.2 NVME to PCIe 4.0 Express Card

Weezy

Hey y'all,

My available M.2 slots are Gen3 as the only Gen 4 slot on the MB (Asrock Z590 C-ac) is being used, I believe, for the WIFI 6 card from what I can tell?

So, I was looking around and found some PCIe cards for Gen 4 M.2 SSD's.

Example 1 - Amazon.com: AMPCOM M.2 NVME SSD to PCIe 4.0 Adapter Card, 64Gbps SSD PCIe4.0 X4 Adapter for Desktop PC , PCI-E GEN4 Full Speed : Electronics

Example 2 - Amazon.com: AMPCOM M.2 NVME SSD to PCIe 4.0 X4 Adapter Card with Copper Cooling Best Heatsink Upgraded for Desktop PC , PCI-E GEN4 Full Speed 64Gbps : Electronics

Has anyone tried these in order to obtain higher Gen4 speeds? Any feedback on performance and stability? Could you run the OS from an SSD on a PCIe card like these? Or would it be better solely for a fast storage option?

I have a Core i7 11700k which does support Gen4, by the way

Thanks!

No its not, the slot under the CPU/Above the first PCIe slot is the Gen4 Slot for NVMe M.2 storage.

What CPU are you using? 10th gen doesn't have gen 4.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Why is the 5800x so hot?

I figured it would be as well, but speed tests showed Gen3 speeds, not Gen4. I'll test them again to be sure though

You didn't mention which SSD you're using.

The adapter isn't going to help you, unless you attach the adapter itself to a slot that supports PCIe 4.0. The board only has one of these and you'll probably want your GPU in there.

m.2_1 and the top PCIE slot are the only spots you'll have Gen 4 then. You'd have 3.0 speeds regardless of what expansion slots or adapters you used unless you moved your GPU to a 3.0 slot.

Ah, that answers my question then, since I have no desire to move my GPU, I guess Gen3 it is, still not too shabby. Still curious if anyone has used their PCIe slots for additional M.2 storage and if it's stable and performs well. I assume it would, but at least I know not to purchase Gen4 SSD storage as it would be a waste of money. Appreciate the help!
