Full upgrade suggestions

Budget ($1500-$2000 CAD):

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games. All types. I like running at max graphics when possible.

Other details (I7 6700k, Corsair AIO, Strix 980TI, Corsair Vengeance Lpx 16GB DDDR4, Samsung 820 EVO , Corsair 860i,  Hero Maximus VIII, Triple monitors running @ 1440p 144hz

Hi Folks,

When I built this PC years ago, it was King Ding-a-ling, unfortunately it's certainly showing it's age. I'm looking to do a considerable upgrade this coming holiday season and am looking for suggestions as I'm a bit "out of the game" if you will. When it comes to components that is and what works well together.

The first sign I needed an upgrade was as soon as I saw that I don't meet the reqs for Windows 11..... (mins reqs may change I know, but it was still sad to see 😞)

I'm looking to play the newest games on ultra settings with ray tracing and all. Games like Cyperpunk, Star Citizen, FarCry 6, and the new games coming out like Halo, Dying light 2, etc...

I do want to be able to comfortably hold a reasonable frame rate on triple monitors as well. Although there are not many games that support it.

Nvidia surround does an ok job for the most part, I just think my 980TI is getting slapped around too much on the newer games...

I'm figuring I'll need to upgrade the MB, Processor, RAM, GPU (Don't need the best GPU as it alone can eat up the budget).

Hopefully the PSW is still up to snuff. (Water cooler may need to be changed as well). I have a Corsair 780T case, so plenty of room to play with.

Thanks

This won't be very future proof for 1440p 144Hz max settings, but it's certainly a healthy upgrade from what you have. If you can save a bit more for a 6700 XT, that would be a decent chunk better for both raw speed and VRAM capacity, but I tried to appeal to your current budget.

Newegg is probably one of the easiest places to get a gpu right now, but you almost always have to bundle it with something. Comes with a new PSU, so you can keep your old one as a spare. I would recommend getting another kit of the same exact RAM that you purchased, to bump up your RAM to 32GB too.

Yes! Have you?! Look at the reviews and everything for 12th gen. Watch JayzTwoCents videos. The power consumption is nuts, and intel is still doing a lot wrong. I would still recommend an AM4 cpu at this point.

Have you been paying attention to the stock issues? DDR5 is 100% sold out and goes for 5-10x MSRP on eBay, and even DDR4 Z690 boards are going to cost a lot more than my pick + the 12600K needs a beefier cooler.

The power consumption at stock settings is about 120W... There's nothing insane about that... My 5600X pulls 110W all day at a 4.7Ghz OC, has 4 less cores, and 4 less threads. The 12600K practically lives at 4.9Ghz on single-threaded workloads, without OC'ing.

12600K also supports DDR4, and a relative Z690 board is about $200-300. It doesn't need a "beefier cooler" neither.

So the all core OC CPU running more efficient than a stock CPU is meant to counter that how?...

USD or CAD, you just proved my point that Z690 is more expensive. If a CPU is drawing 120W stock, a Hyper 212 is not going to be sufficient, whereas the 5600X can be kept at 70W with minimal performance loss. Yes, the CPU is higher spec and has a reason to draw more power, but tied in with a better cooler, this whole proposition already hits OP's budget ceiling with the same GPU.
