Give me some anime recommendations

varrys

I've seen some Myazaki movies. I enjoyed Castlevania on Netflix. But haven't done any real anime. With Cowboy Bebop live action coming up, debating whether to go in new or watch the original.

So give me some other recommendations for a newbie to the genre!

If you want something more on the psychological horror side, try Serial Experiments Lain.

Thanks, I'll consider but not usually into horror. That said, mess with your head horror is more my style than straight gore!

If you haven’t watched the original I highly recommend it and directed by the same guy, Samurai Champloo

Both are absolutely fantastic shows.

If you wanted some weird stuff, I recommend Speed Grapher and Desert Punk.

I wouldn't recommend starting with it. That's a show I would say you kinda wanna ease into.

Sailor moon?

Is it relatively kiddie? Not that kids shows can't be great, but I was aiming more toward adult audience.

It was a little joke, anime is a pretty broad category.  If you're looking for tentacle porn or the usual o face stuff then google will serve you well.  I'm not that into it but I'm sure there must be a "Netflix of anime" somewhere.

Completely depends on what you enjoy

Action, romance, comedy, mystery, slice of life etc etc.

It's like saying "I'm want to start watching movies, give me some recommendations"

Those animes are my favorites that are probably a good way to start watching animes.

Cowboy Bebop is probably my favorite? Many think it's a bit boring, but I like the pace and it's a great build up. And I really enjoyed the music. (Sci Fi: The setting is a bunch of head hunters - and a dog - in a space ship trying to make money)

Ghost in the shell. I don't like all the series equally, but I loved the whole setting. (It's Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk, the main characters are from a police squad, it's about politics, big corps, stuff like that.)

Full Metal Alchemist is a must see. (It's fantasy / adventure, two brothers that are alchemists,... running around doing quests I guess)

Nichijou if you like something chill, funny and imho mostly strange. Think of having a smile and a "WTF is even happening" expression at the same time. And probably helps to understand Japanese humor a bit bitter xD

Attack on Titans. The visuals are awesome and the constant hopelessness really keeps you on your toes. (Horror / Fantasy. Huge giants attacking a nation that's surrounded by walls and "special forces" that are trying to keep them out.)

Berserk is one of my favorites, but mostly because that's the first manga I've started reading some 20 years ago. If you watch it, watch the 1997 version. (Horror, Fantasy, a commoner that wants to take a kingdom (who is not the protagonist))

Samurai Champloo was already mentioned. Not on my top list, but probably a good anime to start with, too. I mostly enjoyed it because of the guy from Ryukyu ^^

Fair point. It's why I mentioned Castlevania, but it's one of my only forays into the genre. I've seen Aeon Flux, but that's not really considered true anime.

Cowboy Bebop - Fantastic action anime that sucks me in everytime I watch it

Initial D - A lot of people meme on Initial D. But it really is a fantastic series, not to mention that Seasons 1, 2, and 4 are on Hulu so they're easily accessible. Just try not to focus too hard on the 3D racing animations...It hasn't aged well but still gets me excited
