In home audio solution for multiple rooms

Hello all,

I am looking for a audio solution where I can connect my phone to a "base station" via the wifi anywhere in the house and select what rooms I want it to be playable in. I know sonos has this, but its pretty expensive and was wondering if there were any cheaper alternatives or raspberry pi/diy solutions.

Thank you for your help!

It was possible with old apple stuff too. I have a friend who set all that up.  I don’t think he ever wound up using it much. My grandmother had that in the 70’s.  Did it the hard way with lots of wires and switches.  Was most useful for large parties I think.  I never saw a whole lot of value in it myself.  I’m not a big music fan though.  Strikes me as one of those things that sounds cooler on paper than it is in practice.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I was thinking of doing it with switches, but that did not seem efficient for modularity and changing the system. Does sound like a cool idea though!

She had a whole little room, former closet I think. Turn table, records, mic, and a bank of switches.  Whole house had to be wired for it I suspect.  House itself is long gone.  Anyway when I saw it it had already not been used in years.
