GS110-MX 10G Only Works in one direction. 5-10mbit in the other direction

Go to solution Solved by FloRolf,

Yeah so as it turns out the Switch was dead.

Already have a replacement unit here and now everything works fine!

Hellooooo and welcome to another 10G Ethernet Troubleshooting thread.

I recently bought a used GS110-MX, which has two 10G (and 2,5G/5G!) ports, however, one of them can only receive and not send.

Here's a iperf, once from PC to NAS, once from NAS to PC.

image.png.73029a2ce597bdd5378ae7aa4e97b940.png

I tried this with multiple PC's and the switch is always the one common factor. I tried with my other two 10G switches and it's fine.

It's worth mentioning that it's literally only 9mbit, Accessing the NAS through this just doesn't work, it's incredibly slow.

The Switch itself DOES however indicate the port as being 10G with both Green Lights blinking.

Interestingly it seems to be Port 9 not working, because when i switch NAS and PC ports on the switch sending gets fast but receiving will be slow.

The previous owner told me in his possession the switch worked fine, but he can say all he wants at this point....

Any ideas?

THAAAAAANKS!

EDIT; One more thing, the 9mbit is actually fast, usually it'll sit at around 5mbit, so it's not accidentally in a 10mbit mode, which the port doesn't even have iirc.

image.png.5afd4d1e5a791eae976d9dd3f07a0db7.png

When i give it more clients it also WILL go faster, but not really by a lot.

Have you tried removing any switch all together and connecting the computers directly to each other?

I recommend you try booting to linux from a usb and running the tests there to see if it is software or hardware related.

well i know for a fact that 10G is working between both machines because i have two other 10G swtiches that work just fine AND i can see perfect 10G in one direction here as well.

I could try a Linux Boot but i don't reaaally see the point.

Anyone?

Maybe the Network Gurus @Windows7geor @leadeater?

Also tried the Netgear Community but it's like any other Manufacturer Community - pretty much dead.

It's almost like it's somehow running at half duplex or something but it's not a managed switch and half duplex at 1Gbps and up isn't a thing so I'm perplexed, more because it's an unmanaged device so no settings to change =/

Yeah i am also really confused why this happens. Unfortunately the switch is so basic that it doesn't have any kind of button or reset feature or whatever. It's only power cord and RJ45 ports.

Netgear support thus far wasn't helpful at all, they only have a phone Hotline where you can't get through.

The switch was bought on amazon but Amazon support doesn't want to rma it since I wasn't the one who bought it.... 🙄 Might have to contact the seller and rma it through them, which sounds like fun.

Reading through everything it sounds like the ASIC responsible for the switching on that port is damaged be it from natural degradation, manufacturing defect, or Lightning/ESD. You might be able to run WireShark over the port and see if it's sending out loads of garbage. That would tell you something's definitely wrong with the port itself.

For shits'n'giggles did you try 2.5Gbit & 1Gbit to see if it behaves differently?

If you have nothing to lose I'd go as far as to pop the top on this thing and see if anything looks fishy on the circuit-board. Could be an easy fix with a soldering iron/hot air & tweezers if it's some lose connection or something.

Outside of this I think you've already eliminated all other possible variables.

I've been experiencing issues with upstream on Windows since about September on ALL Windows PCs I have, wired or wireless it always comes up short of what it should be.

I managed to mitigate it by disabling interrupt moderation on the network adapters in both Windows and my Linux server.

That's why its recommended you check in Linux as I'd be almost certain it will work perfectly there without any changes at all, proving its a Windows issue.

I also had a lot of issues with my GS110EMX until I enabled flow control, unfortunately as you have the unmanaged version you can't try that. 😞  Its probably not that though as it tended to be an issue when accessing my 10Gbit server over Gigabit, it would only do 200Mbit on the Gigabit client as TCP/IP wasn't correctly throttling the speed so the server would just hammer out traffic much faster than the client could receive it.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)

How can i tell if it does? I just installed it and there seems to be a whole bunch of stuff going on.

i can't believe this tbh...

1G works just fine. I just selected 1G in the NIC adapter settings.

Well the problem is, that everything works fine with other switches, so i kinda doubt it's windows, HOWEVER from the first part of my reply, that 1G works, i am left really confused.

This suggests the ASIC responsible for that port is having issues switching at 10 Gigabit. The ASIC has to operate at a higher frequency for 10Gig than 1Gig. Maybe I missed it but did you try switching cables? Could be one of those rare manufacturing hitches where that particular manufacturer doesn't like your cable.

Out of interest, have you tried actually performing a copy from that machine over the network?  Sometimes I find iperf3 gives very different (slower) results to real-world usage.

You can also try in UDP mode by adding "-u -b 10G" to the end on the client, although I find even mine tops out at 4.5Gbit over UDP for some reason despite doing 9.4Gbit over TCP.
