Ryzen 5800x ready motherboard

Husk_te

tried to build a pc with an msi mag b550 tomahawk and had to go through the hassles of updating the bios. ended up being defective anyway so was a waste of time. is there a good alternative that doesn’t require updating the bios??

Any B550 board will not require a BIOS update for 5000 series CPU's.
However I would recommend something with a BIOS flashback feature, and if you're looking to go cheap or do not need PCIE Gen 4 (literally no one out of enterprise situations do,) look for something along the lines of B450.

Updating your BIOS isn't hard, and honestly, you will be flashing a good bit with Ryzen as AGESA updates that come along seriously help out with stability and performance.

3. Do not buy for brand, buy for the product.

As of purchasing back in August, the B550-F ROG STIX blah blah blah... does not need a BIOS update for Ryzen 5000 series.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

So why did the op have to update it on a B550 board then ? The B550 chipset was released before Ryzen 5000. The majority of boards should be updated by now but it is not 100% guaranteed.

That's generally what I meant, sorry for the confusion.
Tomahawk is definately a very reliable board.

B550 boards are more than plenty for your CPU.
MSI MAG B550 is perfect due to the flashback feature.
You can't brick with a flashback because all you have to do is flash a BIOS to the motherboard without a CPU in the board, that is unless you've done something completely horrid to it.
Super simple, don't even need to do anything within the BIOS.

With that said, if you still have the last board, before chalking it up as dead, run a Flashback to the latest BIOS version using a flashdrive.
If you don't know how to use BIOS Flashback, look up a tutorial on YouTube, there are plenty.
There should also be documentation in your motherboard manual about how to go about flashing the BIOS with the Flashback feature.

It's a pretty rare problem. I used to have nightmares when I was on a tight budget of not having the right chip to update the BIOS. The ability to flash without a chip is a dream come true, that's for sure.

And for all the worrying I used to do, if you buy the board from a high-volume retailer, it's usually got a recent BIOS and isn't a problem anyhow.

How long have you waited? When the LED is flashing, that means it's flashing the ROM for your BIOS.

It can take anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on how complicated the BIOS is, or how the hardware is set up.

Are you 100% positive that you have the right BIOS on the drive and it's at the root of the flashdrive?
Have you talked to MSI Support?
If you really think the board is damaged you can send it in for an RMA from either the seller / motherboard manufacturer.

Why...?  Who/what told you to do so?

Did you not suspect that the CPU may have been poorly seated or the cooler badly mounted...?

What (other) troubleshooting steps did you take?

If the machine didn't post, something was NOT fine...  🤨

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Then you either have the wrong BIOS being flashed or the board is damaged.

Contact MSI support.
