how can you remotely connect to a desktop from a different internet?

rd applications seem to work only when both devices are under the same internet connection

 

is there any (free) way to do the same while the devices are in complete different locations?

 

is it possible to turn off, and on a pc remotely and then connect to it remotely whenever required? so it's not on power 24/24h while doing nothing?

I personally use Chrome Remote Desktop

You can use chrome Remote Desktop, I use team viewer.

 

For remote wake, it’s called wake on LAN. For that you need to enable it in the BIOS of system and in windows, and would need to open a port on your router. Basically, you can do WOL (wake on lan) remotely, but it isn’t super easy to set up, and personally I wouldn’t open a port in my router to a windows machine… not exactly a secure approach. What I do, which is likely a little to advanced, I have a raspberry pi set up on the network I want to access. I SSH into that pi and run a WOL command from that to wake the windows PC. Then remote control the machine I WOL’ed with team viewer.

 

Everything is possible, just takes some research and learning 🙂

Sounds to me like you need to open the ports for RD on your router.

I wouldn't recommend opening the standard port outwards though, for security reasons.

 

Are you able to open ports?

If you're behind CGNAT (sp?) It's just easier to go with a TeamViewer/AnyDesk approach.

I would NEVER open RD to the internet, I don't care what ports it's listening on. Scanning ports is stupid simple and done all the time, it's maybe 2 extra seconds to find a RD session behind a non-default port.

There are options for securing it though, like self-signed certificates for example.

Or, alternatively, if you have a domain at cloudflare you can secure it that way.

I really would have to advise against that. It is simply not secure enough.

I'm pretty sure AnyDesk/TeamViewer is what you are looking for.

As far as I know you can run AnyDesk free for personal use, don't honestly know about TeamViewers status on that.

TeamViewer request money, anydesk too if I remember correctly

 

while the raspberry solution of @LIGISTX ? ps: a pi zero should be enough?

 

also having not ever doing something like this, someone has any tutor link or keywords too look at?

Not sure about anydesk but TeamViewer is free for personal use and I’ve been using it for many years, it’s only paid if you use it commercially. As mentioned Chrome Remote Desktop is another popular option though I’ve never used it.
As others have said be careful with opening up ports, unless you know what you are doing it is not advised, especially for something like this where there are many other options.

Teamviewer is free for personal use.

 

A pi zero is fine, anything you can SSH into will work. There are multiple things you will need to learn for this…

 

You need a pi zero and learn how to get that running. Learn how to SSH in and run commands (lots of tutorials on setting up a r-pi), will need to instal a wake on lan client on the pi (I can look it up later, off hand I don’t remember it’s name), will need to open a port on the router for SSH and forward that to the pi, will want to make sure the pi is secure and preferably ssh without password and use RSA keys instead. I’ll need to enable WOL in bios of the machine yiur trying to wake and in windows, tutorials for windows are all over, but every mobo is a little different; look for magic packet or wake on lan setting on BIOS. 
 

It’s all not hard, but if you have never done any of these things before, it isn’t going to just work right away for you I wouldn’t imagine.

No. You don’t want to do this, unless you enjoy getting pwned. Should never open windows boxes up to the internet in any way… they are just not designed to be deployed like that. Team viewer is what you likely want, at least for the remote control portion.
