I'm currently studying computer science at my college and I love watching your videos. I would say I'm pretty knowledgeable with computers and components and was wondering if or what you went to college for. I know that coding and that stuff is very interesting, but I also love the hardware aspect. Any advice would be awesome!!!

Your idea to ask a successful  businessman how he did it is pretty smart.

To bad that also makes him a very busy man.

I think you would have more luck trying some of his other social media. Altho chances are very slim.

He's also somewhat famous, increasing the people contacting him even more.

There are less successful individuals that have more time to answer your questions.

I know Linus did attend University, but ended up dropping out. I don't remember what he was going for or the reason, but I know he has discussed this several times in the past in videos.

Software engineer here.  The best software engineers I know took these paths to University:

1) Philosophy degree

2) Another philosophy degree

3) Dropped out

4) Computer science degree.  

 

In short, unless you're going into a very specialized STEM field, college does nothing more than prove you're smart enough to learn new things.  (Note that not attending college does not prove the negative -- i.e., not going to college doesn't prove you're not smart)

As said, Linus doesn't have degree or finished higher education. I also don't think he was in for CompSci or such, more likely it was business. Luke was studying CompSci something-something.

 

The importance of education? Do something you like. It does not need to be tech, but if thats only thing you really like, and think that you may not get bored doing same stuff for work as you do as hobby, why not.

I always find these types of threads weird because they inevitably end up full of people who say "schools are a scam" or "don't go to school, you can be successful without them" or "I didn't like school so you shouldn't either".

 

To me those people just sound like people who failed their education because it was too hard and instead of going "maybe this wasn't for me" they blame the school and education system, because clearly they are perfect so if they fail its not their fault. 

 

Maybe it's because uni is free in Sweden, but here in Sweden the only people without degrees are truly those who shouldn't be trusted with anything but low paying, simple jobs, and those are the only jobs they'll get in 95% of the cases. 

 

I think a lot of people who are angry at the school system just don't get it. They fail at it and dismiss it as not important. They don't understand why it's important and why employers values it.

That's what high degrees of education is... In order to get a degree you have to take tests to prove you know your shit. The degree you get once you finish is a certificate that you have some level of qualifications, experience and knowledge. You are literally describing why we have degrees, and yet you don't realize that's what they are.

 

A degree is a certificate. That's why employers value them so much. It's not because "employers are brainwashed" like someone else said. It's because degrees are PROOF that you have some level of knowledge. If someone just claims to know something but doesn't have a degree or other proof of it, its just words thst might as well be false or maybe they are overestimating their own abilities. 

 

If you are going to employ someone and both seem qualified, but one has a degree and/or certs that verifies they know their shit, and the other has 0 evidence that they possess the knowledge they claim to have, toys have to be a moron to employ the one without any evidence (all else being equal).

There's definitely plenty of room for the people at the top of the best colleges to succeed, but unless you're there, there's more fruit to be sewn outside of college.  There's a massive shortage of skilled labor in the country -- plumbers, electricians, roofers, contractors, etc, and plenty of people who've got work to do.  The ones you can even get to answer their phone basically turn down any job that isn't worth 5 figures to them.
