Thermal Paste V.S Thermal Pad On Laptop CPU ?

Use thermal paste.

 

Also, check the heatpipes / heatsinks to see if they are blocked with dust.

You may need to refer to the laptop's maintenance / service manual for disassembly instructions.

 

I was helping my girlfriend with a dying laptop HDD...but she was also complaining that the keyboard was also gets really hot.

Removing the cover, the fans, etc are pretty clean from dust (she disassembled and clean it before) ... but I decided to dig deeper.

Oh boy, I found more hidden dust bunnies...blocking the cooling fins, from the inside.

This was an HP Omen gaming laptop.

Im sure most laptops have and exposed die on the CPU or GPU. But I'm struggling to find out if I should use thermal paste or pads. I currently have an MSI 2PE GE70 Apache Pro and yes I know it is really old but I just need it for school work and maybe some light gaming. I have been noticing that the CPU has been getting up to 93C and I'm starting to get a bit worried and I decided to change the paste. I have be researching on good pastes and came across the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut with a conductivity of 12,5 W/mk and SYY Thermal Compound Paste with a conductivity of 15.7 W/mk. But then I saw the  Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut Thermal Pad with a whopping  62.5 W/mK But it says it is highly conductive with electricity. I don't know if it would be safe to use the pad due to the dye being exposed and If It Is safe on aluminum. So what would I be better off with with better cooling?

For direct contact heatsinks, Paste is ALWAYS better than pads.

 

Pads are for situations where there's a gap between the two and you wouldn't have direct contact otherwise.

Do note that thermal conductivity has directionality. Carbonaut and other graphene pads only have great transfer in the plane of the sheet (i.e. the direction of spread) and the conductivity perpendicular to the sheet (i.e. the one that matters) tends to be rubbish. Also, paste actas only where it needs to, whereas the pad blocks metal-to-metal contact.

Ok from this point I know now that pads are not efficient for some laptops.

 

I found 2 different types of paste and which one would you consider best or do you have any better options ?
