So I got lucky with Best Buy a couple of days ago and nabbed a LHR 3080. I'm currently running my old 6800k and am wondering, do I upgrade now and grab a 5800x or do I wait to see Intel's offering at the end of the year and upgrade then. Just looking for opinions as I've not been following the tech space very closely this year. I usually keep my computer about 5 or 6 years if not more. Thanks in advance!

If you're happy with performance ddr5 should be getting implemented for mainstream next year, may be better to wait

I would heavily recommend buying a 5800x because it will improve the performance so much. I wouldn't bother at all with Intel's next gen because that company is in shambles. BUT then again you could wait and see what AMD has to offer next gen with potential for DDR5 and moving to LGA.

Possibly the worst piece of advice I've heard in a while. That's like telling people not to bother with Zen when it first came out because AMD was a dumpster fire for the past decade.

Thanks for the advice guys. The reason I upgraded gpus is I went to 1440p and my 980 just can't do it well. Plus more and more games are requiring more than 4gig vram. I'm currently leaning towards the upgrade now. It's a gamble either way but the 5800x should last me a while. Thanks again!

yes, but if you're somewhat happy with the performance you're getting it may be wise to wait, ddr5 around the corner and maybe you dont want to feel left out or something when that happens (only light sarcasm, because  i have seen it so many times… "and i just "upgraded" to … last year" )

Either grab the 5800X now or wait until 2023. You don't want to be an early adopter of a brand new architecture, on a brand new node, with a brand new chipset, and brand new DDR5 RAM. At the very least, you're going to pay a fortune, but you'll also likely experience many bugs and issues. You're going to want to give both Intel and AMD at least a gen to sort things out, and for prices to normalize.

Hey, yea you're right about feeling left out lol. Been there with computer upgrades before. In my experience, when new architecture comes out, it's either prohibitively expensive or kinda buggy. So I think I'm willing to take the risk, thanks again for the input!

yeah, its probably expensive for the first year or so, true… But something tells me they arent going to want to botch it and by end of '22 this will be defacto standard (i mean thats not a difficult prediction to make at all)

Btw, ddr5 is already released (in june iirc)

No idea where you'd get a board tho! But $400 (officially) for 32 gig is actually pretty ok.

That really isn't too bad, probably about double current prices. I halfway figured it would be like when SSDs started hitting the market. But I guess that was different than an upgrade to an existing product.
