Backblaze B2,reliable storage at budget price?

hi guys, hope you are doing well.

sorry for my english.

I am looking for a solution for off-site backup of my nas, while making price comparison I found Backblaze b2 which sounds fing amazing,60$ for a year with unlimited storage you can download your files whenever you need and you can even order a drive in case of a disaster recovery.

did someone try their service and can recommend them?

they have a price calculator which gave me a pretty good price so decided to go ahead and try them,but they have pretty *hitty service,so i won't recommend them.

B2 is not unlimited storage for 60$
thats backblaze normal consumer backup service which wont run on a NAS. B2 is pay by the GB and pay for download bandwidth. 5TB of stuff uploaded would cost 300$ a year if nothing changed

I use the consumer version on my nas. But it's a vm in a windows server so I just make the nas drives also accessible to windows as local drives and it back them up without question. It's funny because years ago they even had a guide on their website how to spoof a network drive as a local drive :p.

thanks for making me aware of that,at this price i just better buying office365 for 150~ usd a year or even google business

for backup a NAS? that only gets you 1 TB

yes you can 100% spoof it but it wouldn't be my first recommendation

Oh yeah for sure it can be really finicky to get going and keep going. I'm just lucky with the fact they are in the same system.

yea it should be enough for critical stuff,like family photos and stuff like that.

do you have something to recommend instead of 365?

it works, i already backup my work truenas to an office 365 business account. each user on my team have office365 that their nas folder is backed up to

it's a truenas/freenas server.

If O365 works for you, you can use that so long as you are abiding by their terms of service. 

 

Either way - be wary of B2 and other Object storage services.  They have low storage costs but also charge an egress fee.   Object Storage also stores objects in a different format to files, which means depending on the data you upload - the performance could be absolute garbage. 

 

Object Storage like B2 is meant for cold data, that is infrequently accessed - because when you do access it, it will cost you money. 

 

A good use case for B2 would be to use it to backup your O365, so if O365 went down you could recover your files from B2.  But using B2 for just regular file storage isn't a good use case (in my opinion), there are better alternatives as you've discovered.
