GPU Bios (Am I asking too much?)

I'm going to try to shorten this story as much as I can but I'm a tiny bit frustrated and it's hard not to vent.

 

I luckily got my hands on a MSI RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio through Best Buy. Brought it home, set it up, and was running fine. I take a look to see if there's a bios update on MSI's support page and sure enough there's 2 different versions there (low noise and low temp) but they're nearly a year old now. Out of curiosity I download the low temp bios, being the end effect I would prefer, and start the process. Before applying the bios I notice that my bios is certainly newer than either of the two versions offered so I cancel the flash. I contact MSI support and immediately am told that I have the newest bios...I ask where can I download the newest bios and the point me to the support page...I tell them that that bios is older than what I have and then I'm told I have the newest bios...closed ticket. I take the the MSI forums, try to keep a level head but still point out this craziness with the old bios on the support page, and some random forum user tells me "Wow what a ----" that each batch of gpus is 'tailored' to the parts and I should apologize to the support person...*deep calming breath*...Now I feel like this person is maybe some outspoken employee posing as a user on the forum because, of course, I look at their profile and notice the variety of posts and seemingly weird living habit of being on this MSI forum. Anyway, back on track, I get another reply from a forum mod that the latest version can be obtained through Live Update and that "Each batch uses different version as stated". I replied to the mod thinking they're probably someone that's knows that they're talking about and their reply threw my confidence in them in the trash by saying "First time I see vBios available to download".
 

I've been building gaming rigs since 2005, I've gotten all sorts of responses from different support agents and manufactures. I'm pretty much not going to touch this subject again for a couple of months with MSI unless there's a dire need to. I've had some minor video artifacting after this all happened and I can't pinpoint the issue but god forbid I need this bios flashed and that old one on the site KO's my gpu without this 'per batch tuning'. I'm just asking for mediocre support or basic driver/bios download availability, but for me, MSI missed both of these marks and have persuaded me to stay way for future purchases.

Yeah I've heard horror stories about MSI. They also had two plants catch fire and someone stole a bunch of GPUs a bit a go

Just keeping this here as a Anyway, back on track, I get another reply from a forum mod that the latest version can be obtained through Live Update and that "Each batch uses different version as stated". I replied to the mod thinking they're probably someone that's knows that they're talking about and their reply threw my confidence in them in the trash by saying "First time I see vBios available to download".
 

I've been building gaming rigs since 2005, I've gotten all sorts of responses from different support agents and manufactures. I'm pretty much not going to touch this subject again for a couple of months with MSI unless there's a dire need to. I've had some minor video artifacting after this all happened and I can't pinpoint the issue but god forbid I need this bios flashed and that old one on the site KO's my gpu without this 'per batch tuning'. I'm just asking for mediocre support or basic driver/bios download availability, but for me, MSI missed both of these marks and have persuaded me to stay way for future purchases.

I mean, why are you looking for a new BIOS if your card is running fine?

 

The old saying: 'don't fix if it isn't broken' might apply here. On the Asrock website for example they even state that they don't recommend you update your motherboard BIOS unless you have an issue that needs fixing.  (I typically don't, unless it fixes security flaws).

 

I would leave it alone, especially if your BIOS is newer than the ones available.

 

I understand your frustration with customer support not being knowledgeable however. That is not great. At least they should know if / when / why a BIOS should be available for your card.

If you hang out on a forum devoted to one specific braaaand of PC part enough to have overf 3500 posts, you are either an employee or a fanboy. Nothing will convince me otherwise.

 

That said, yeah, I'd just stick with the VBIOS you have. I am not a fan of updating the BIOS of anything unless there is a specific problem to solve or a specific new feature to be obtained, and MSI certainly isn't inspiring greater confidence here. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

There's a number of reasons to have a stock bios on hand but I have noticed some odd video corruption, can't pinpoint why or how nor reproduce the issue reliably. That aside there was an implication there that I could have easily downloaded and flashed the older bios to my card. Had that happened I would have absolutely pushed support until I got what I wanted but I feel a less knowledgeable person would not have OR had a harder time communicating this to support.

I'm gonna copy pasta some of my last reply but it's less about updating the bios and more about the potential issues:
