I bought this $9000 CPU for $999 😁

Intel CPUs were at one point the go-to for nearly every market segment, with powerful products for gamers, datacenters, and content creators alike. AMD has dethroned them, and that’s led to some strangely cheap products popping up on Ebay… like this 28 core Xeon.

Wait CS Go has a bot setting called Baby? Only other explanation is they had a second computer online so Linus could run up to it to kill it with a knife 🙄

Looks like it would be a great time to pick this up for a future at home render farm.

Second hand server hardware is an interesting way to upgrade one's computer to say the least.

Plenty of performance for the price, though sometimes a bit lacking on the single threaded stuff, but that is increasingly becoming less of a problem to be fair.

Use an old Xeon server CPU myself, were going to upgrade to a better one, but bought one with the wrong socket by mistake... 2011 and 2011-3 is obviously not compatible, and this I knew, but mistakes happen...

So, the advice is to just buy 5950X for same price, with cheaper motherboard, no issues getting the cooler and you can game and do compute workloads on 16 cores and 32 threads which is probably plenty for what demanding users would probably do at home. And if you need more just get a ThreadRipper and it'll still be great for gaming and offer what, 32 cores and 64 threads?

I want to know... what is even the point of this video? Allow me to sum up everything in a few sentences:

"Check out this super expensive (at one time) server chip we got for an eighth of it's price. It kinda sucks at everything nowadays so you shouldn't get one. So... there you go"

Primary Gaming Rig:

Ryzen 5 5600 CPU, Gigabyte B450 I AORUS PRO WIFI mITX motherboard, PNY XLR8 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 RAM, Mushkin PILOT 500GB SSD (boot), Corsair Force 3 480GB SSD (games), XFX RX 5700 8GB GPU, Fractal Design Node 202 HTPC Case, Corsair SF 450 W 80+ Gold SFX PSU, Windows 11 Pro, Dell S2719DGF 27.0" 2560x1440 155 Hz Monitor, Corsair K68 RGB Wired Gaming Keyboard (MX Brown), Logitech G900 CHAOS SPECTRUM Wireless Mouse, Logitech G533 Headset

HTPC/Gaming Rig:

This is my question as well - I know these are ES and QS so performance can vary from chip to chip, but any kind of non-gaming computing benchmark and at least an estimate of whole system price could make horsepower/$ analysis so much easier vs respective 5950X/3960X system. This and last 7980X video was really cool but at least in my case I can't afford to risk several grand to buy overseas parts without clear advantage over reliable new or even used widely-used AMD parts.

I used to look at these processors back in the day dreaming of running minecraft servers on them.. Oh man their actually becoming affordable 😄

28core/56 thread is SIGNIFICANTLY more than 16c/32t. It mightn't be good at gaming but I can see plenty of use cases. And did I mention it comes with a shit ton of PCIe lanes and has all them server/enterprise goodies. It is not for everyone, but for a 1000 bux, I can certainly see the appeal. If someone manages to swap this in a mac pro, then they can save a lot of money.

ThreadRipper 3960X goes for around 1300€, a very modern 24c/48t CPU. Would you bother doing lottery with questionable chips from god knows where without any warranty or anything when you can have this. And it would probably be faster than that Xeon anyway despite less cores and still be able to run games without any issues.

OK, I didn't know about the 3960X. Thanks!
