Problems auto-mounting drives on boot using systemd + No keyboard shortcuts work any more :(

Go to solution Solved by xAcid9,

I use Gnome Disk Utility.

Had to re-install Manjaro last night due to another failed attempt of trying to get the amdgpu/vulkan drivers to install properly (another, black screen of doom - (see every other linux GPU post Ive ever made ))

Anyway ..

Problem 1 - This is the guide that I follow last time is not giving me the same results and I cannot get anything to "auto-mount"

https://forum.manjaro.org/t/root-tip-use-systemd-to-mount-any-device/1185

When I get to section 3 and it asked me to > sudo systemctl start data-backup.mount < it takes forever & then fails and tells me to check "journalctl -xe" of which gives me this result - ( I would prt-screen but that is broken too atm )

rob@rob-Marjaro21 ~]$ journalctl -xe

All I can tell is that "whatsapp" snap app seems to come up a lot ... its so confusing

I have since deleted the data-backup.mount file I created as I do not want to put my foot thru my TV and Im getting close ..... I did try and learn how to use the FSTAB method, but unsurprisingly, every single site I visit either just tells me what its used for or how to use it (without providing any instructions of what to type) .. e.g ... https://wiki.debian.org/fstab .. I find some many of these "guides" are designed for people that have used linux for a while & not people that are trying to learn making 70% of linux guides a massive pain to follow.

Problem 2 - For some reason non of my keyboard shortcuts will work ... I have only tried "prtscreen" and "alt+." as they are the main 2 that I use .. but they do nothing ... I did remove "Spectacle" as I didnt know that u had to have a specific program for such a basic task, but have now re-installed it - but still no luck .. Im a honestly shocked that a screenshot program is 450mb 😕  But I have never removed emoji selector, but the KB shortcut no longer exists & I cant seem to find them in the never ending customization settings in KDE.    Again ... type this is to google and receive a million different ways to fix 1 issue - but none of them work.

I really cannot help feel that every single time a new kernel comes out or a program gets updated .. it breaks something .. Im only in this situ atm due to the pants instructions on the archwiki of how to install amdgpu-pro https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU#AMDGPU_PRO  - Great guide until u hit the "mkinitcpio" bit as it doesnt tell you once again what to type in & if it does ... it doesnt work 1190085702_modconfthere.thumb.png.a794a8796794a273c6a78897a7f40212.png

In the end I came back to this forum for the answer

617504033_SHOULDHAVEWORKED.thumb.png.cfbe4aeaa084a7d02391d18fcde96f54.png

Everything seemed to go fine .. but It booted on the black screen of doom and that was the end of that ( on a good note tho I did manage to figure out how to "nomodeset" in manjaro ( once again not very well documented if you a noob ) .. but then I had the issue of not knowing wtf to do after that as once again ... every single site had a different answer 😕 I have no issue following "good guides" ... I do it all the time for a lot of of things and even managed once to completely disassemble & re-assemble a iPhone 8 to replace the screen and battery, whilst drunk & on MD using the ifixit site - granted it took me about 4 hrs, but I got it done!

Even after using linux for 3 years .. Im thinking of going back to windoze and just putting up with all the rubbish that comes with it ... I really cannot understand why there is bugger all continuity within linux .. Every single time a new update for anything comes along ... something breaks .... at least in windows you expect this ... Linux is becoming disappointing as innovation just = A hell of a lot more re-configuring and whoopey 😕

Oh n too top it off ... https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/n8vj3y/plasma_5215_text_flicker_and_artifact/    Once again .... updates just break linux not improve it 😕

Without knowing what filesystem the drives are its impossible to help. You need to install some packages, which ones depend on what FS you're mounting (CIFS, NFS, BTRFS etc).

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I want to come back after 3 beers, a healthy dose of uplifting house music (Jody Wisternoff April 2021 DJ Mix👍) & a bit of grit to get this bleeding resolved!

I think I must have had a bad install where pretty much everything worked apart from 1 or 2 random things that I could not place my finger on as after a fresh re-install .. mainly every thing is working again (apart from the random artifacts linked above) ... Still gonna say it .... " Bl***y Linux! .. Maybe its my age n I should really be saying "Bl***y Computers!!" 🤣

Also I thought I would re-solution the fix to xAcid9 - it turns out that route kicks the ass off the Fstab & systemd route and is like x1000 easier than both those methods .. So Thank you!!!

To save myself this potential future hassle if I ever need to re-install (most likely soon as im going to re-re-re-re-re-attempt getting dxvk working properly again) .. is there a terminal command that I can run that will check that everything has installed correctly from the usb?

Why you need to use terminal? Radeon driver from Manjaro MHWD didn't work? Try the open source first.

The open source AMD Driver is built in the kernel and utilizes the Mesa Stack. The only thing that should be available to install is amdgpu-pro, the proprietary driver that most developers don't target outside of things like Blender. Usually in that case, you probably just need the opencl implementation from the pro stack which can be found here as a standalone install on Arch based distros, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/opencl-amd/

I see your using Plasma, can you check the About section to see if your on Xorg or Wayland?

Looking through your posts I see you have a R9 280, the only thing you should need is

sudo pacman -S vulkan-radeon lib32-vulkan-radeon

If you tried to install amdgpu-pro, I would personally undo it.

Hi Again & thx for you replies 🙂

xAcid9 - I believe that I have all the correct drivers installed but I do not have the option to select amdgpu from that list 😞

Dam.thumb.png.ec183a07ceaf1679bed079c5dc5ac3ef.png

Nayr438 -

Im deffo on the R9 290, but I did also own a 280 & a 270x of which you have read some previous battles .. I believe that I have all the correct drivers installed, its just not auto-switching over n I guess when it comes down to the last final steps, I must be doing something wrong .. but I just cant place my finger on it.

315567256_SHOULDHAVEWORKED.thumb.png.61b1cff5772059bc049cb2e2f803cd96.png

The only issue I can see I had was with the initramfs command (not to sure what that does tbh) & with the modconf part, I tried that with & without a "#" but they both ended with a black screen.  But as far as I can tell I followed the wiki correctly as it indicated that all went well before the reboot nt eh blackscreen.

This is where Im getting stuck atm, as I can sometimes get into the tty3(Think that what its called) when I enter the nomodeset correctly, but Im a little lost as to what to do then .. ie how to navigate and what I need re-edit & where ... Still learning 😊

Atm Im back at the stage where I have all the same drivers installed above again, I believe I have vulkan installed correctly ... This time Im using a Mesa version that Valve have provided to use with their ACO compiler as they have just added support for my card (hence the painful re-attempts at getting this working) But I had the same result with the OG drivers that came pre-installed too.

But what ever I seem to do either makes no difference to the AMDGPU status or I get a black screen 😞

In answer to Xorg or Wayland ... It says X11 in the sys info bit so Im going to assume its Xorg ... I did try xrender and the other opengl but they made no difference ... However .. this will blow ure mind ... Recently ..every time I get to the stage where I have installed the AMDGPU-pro drivers and reboot, just because .. they disappear .. so its obviously something to do with them again 🤣

       Kernel driver in use: radeon
       Kernel modules: radeon, amdgpu

I cant think of any other info that may be helpful, but anything you can suggest to help me get AMPGPU running will be gladly attempted 🙂

I see you installed mesa-git, I would advise against this as it breaks a lot.

If you want a more upstream Mesa Build

  • Add this repo https://aur.chaotic.cx/
  • sudo pacman -Sy mesa-tkg-git lib32-mesa-tkg-git
  • I would also go ahead and grab a more upstream fsync patched kernel as well
    • sudo pacman -S linux-tkg-pds linux-tkg-pds-headers

I see amdgpu-pro is installed, remove it. If you want valves patches you don't want amdgpu-pro. The Arch wiki also shows it as being unsupported on GCN1 and GCN2 cards

I double checked and it does seem that the 290 is a Sea Islands card, so you need the following

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

  • You can just enable both of them, the options just tell amdgpu that its ok to load for these cards.
options amdgpu si_support=1
options amdgpu cik_support=1

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf

blacklist radeon

I wouldn't worry about mkinitcpio.conf, just leave it at it's defaults. We are just going to blacklist the radeon module rather than prioritizing amdgpu.

sudo mkinitcpio -P
