Buying first laptop to replace a RTX2080s & 3800x ATX gaming rig

Hi all!  First proper post here other than my welcome post so go easy on me

 

Currently working through the RTX gaming laptop guide, there is a lot to choose from!

 

But I am also after some advice from people who own/have owned a gaming laptop before as I have had nothing other than an iPad Pro for working / playing on the move

 

 

 

I am leaving the UK for Canada in the next couple of months, and I will be selling both my 980ti and 2080super rig’s (980ti was my last build, now GF’s rig)  and after a few months work we anticipate going for ‘the van life’ for 6 months or so - this has led me away from taking my gpu with us and doing a new atx build, and instead having the laptop so that we have a pc on the move

 

 

I’m not too concerned on battery life, as long as its acceptable.  I’ll be honest, since hitting the late 20’s, I find less time for gaming but when I do, I’m a total snob and appreciate the ‘1440p everything ultra’ setup (hence I have yet to go 4K).  Long gaming sessions will be so few and far between, I will be happy having the engine running in the van for power.  

 

The majority of the time it will likely be used as a media watching machine & for editing photos and drone footage - amateur only so not make or break on the fastest performance possible, but if possible without going silly $$$$ I do wonder what performance I can get in comparison to my 2080super & 3800x

 

Happy to go with intel or AMD on CPU but really I’m a RTX fanboi at the moment

Edit;  The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 15.6 currently has my attention, looking for reviews now (Ryzen 9 5900HS/RTX3080/1Tb SSD ((handy for photo & drone video storage)

Not all 3080 are equal...the one in Zephyrus G15 is Max-Q and only has 100W TGP. Also there is no MUX

 

Do you have any preferences on weight and battery life? Wait time?

I don’t think I’m going to care about weight, as this will be solely used either at home or in a camper van

Not urgent at all, I want to be on Canadian ground before purchasing and I won’t be flying for another month or two at the earliest

I’m confused Once I move to Canada I’m looking to buy the laptop, so I will be living in Canada with the Canadian adress

Kinda flexible, I don’t want to burn the cash but around 3k CAD would be plenty I hope?  Forgot to mention I really want to go for a 1440p iOS screen if possible - I’m on 144hz and happy atm so not too fussed about higher refresh rates

Honestly I nearly said no because I’ve spent my entire tech life with flagship gpu’s in pc builds….  Hurts to know it’s not an upgrade, but at the same time I shouldn’t be comparing pc’s to laptops really… so unless there are other models that are leaving more performance on the table for just a little more, that seems like a good shout!

Battery life is almost non existent with high end gaming laptops. If you have a laptop with a 150W GPU and a 65W CPU, you're looking at about 20 minutes of battery life a full throttle. 40 minutes at 50% and so on.

 

Laptop batteries are measured in watt-hours and the largest battery you can get in a laptop (due to FAA restrictions) is 100 watt-hours. That means the biggest battery available can supply 100W for 1 hour.

I don’t really have a budget so that’s fine, I’ve had 32Gb ram for a few years  of so will also put into this rig

Not sure what you based our earlier conversation on about comparing my desktop to the laptop gpu, as the description says 3080 not 3070 or was you still talking about the 3080 mobile and just a typo

 

also if I spec the 32Gb ram I get the upgraded Ryzen 9 5900X which doesn’t seems a bad deal for the extra cost involved

yes i'm referring to 3080 mobile, where the 165W TGP variant is faster than 2080S desktop

 

FYI 5900HX is just a higher bin 5800H
