I have Windows7 with 4GB ram, I want to update to 10 cuz its alot late, should i get 2gb stick or a 4gb?

Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

Windows 7 is not causing the hiccups, and it will actually be better than Windows 10 for your computer.

Considering what you use the computer for, it doesn't matter that Windows 7 is discontinued.

You should determine how many memory slots you have on the motherboard and the maximum size your memory supports. if you currently have 2 sticks of 2 GB and only 2 slots on the motherboard, then you wouldn't really be able to upgrade the ram.

Buy a second 4 GB stick if you currently have only one 4 GB stick. It will improve the performance both from a capacity (8 is much better than 4) but also from the fact it runs in dual channel mode (when you have 2 sticks)

Its been more than 1 year windows has discontinued windows7, and i am still using it. I have 4Gb ram i3 5th gen with 5500 graphics. It lags alot when playing games like minecraft, the new 1.16 update takes more than 2gb though i allotted it 1.5gb.

So will windows 10 run fine on 4gb ram? and also considering my specs, its just a potato pc, can it run it lag free? will 4gb bottleneck it?

And also if you have option to select between 6gb (2gb stick) or 8gb(4gb sticl) which one will you choose for light gamer and ofc windows 10? (my budget is almost low so pls)

Can windows10 and few games run smoothly on 6gb ram?

Thankyou in advance

Actually not too well. It does run, but with noticeable hiccups.

You will also need an SSD if you don't have one yet. With Intel 5500 graphics and a 5th gen dual core i3, you won't be playing anything beyond Minecraft. Install the optifine mod to make it run better.

I would go with 4GB stick, so you have 8GB.  That's kinda the minimum for Win 10 and playing any games, even Minecraft.

And as said above, look into an SSD when you free up some more money.  It will definitely help.

And of course Optifine if you haven't already, but I think almost every MC player uses it?

To all the people saying you shouldn't upgrade to Windows 10... you're wrong.

You should 100% upgrade to Windows 10, because if your system can connect to the internet it's chance of getting a virus are so much higher than a system running Windows 10. Please for the love of god upgrade. You're not getting the same security updates as someone using a more modern OS and that makes your system so much more vulnerable.

Oh,

Yes i had the same question in my mind regarding safety. I really don't want SSD, My this PC loads windows in 2-3 minutes and im fine, and the hdd works a little faster than what i except. I just had a question will i3 5th gen work fine for windows 10, leaving all the specs?

Yes i use optifine and clients which boost fps, i get 60fps constant using vsync most the time. And i dont think ssd is a big help rn. I don\t have alot money to spend on my pc, the moment i get more money i will surely get ssd!

An 5th gen i3 will work just fine with Windows 10 (I did a number of budget builds a few years ago with 6th gen i3's), I've had Windows 10 run on dual core Pentiums just fine, upgrade to 8Gb's of ram and you'll be golden. Also if your PC is this old and running on a HDD I would recommend defragmenting your hard drive. That will speed things up a LOT if you chose not to upgrade.

However if you choose to keep this PC for more than a year or so you should 100% upgrade to Windows 10. It'll continue receiving security updates until October of 2025, whereas support for Windows 7 ended already.
