Need help with WiFi extension.

Hi,

I live in a 3 floor household.

My parents live in the Ground Floor and I live in the 3 floor.

We have a 100Mbps connection. It's in the ground floor.

Due to some situations I had to increase the range of our WiFi.

So, I got a TP-Link WR820N and a 25 meter CAT 6 Ethernet Cable. Installed them properly.

Here comes the problems.

1. I thought it will be the same network or same connection instead of that I had to create a new connection.

To be more clear let's say the name of the WiFi in the ground floor is Network 1

I thought I'll be able to use Network 1 but I had to create another called Network 2 in the 3rd floor.

So, is there a way to use Network 1 on my room in the third floor ?

2. Though the 2nd router is connected through LAN I only get 60Mbps.

Please help.

1. Actually, that's how it works, you connect a router to another router, you have to 'make' two separate SSIDs. If it's running on the same SSID, and on the same channel, it's no good, lots of interference. If you wanna have such thing in 'one network', use mesh routers. It's lot more expensive tho, and I don't think it's worth to get anyway.

2. I ever read somewhere on the forum of some 100 Mbps router wouldn't reach their advertised speed, as it's bottlenecking. I'd get a gigabit one to reach the speed (although, if your main router's LAN is FE either, unfortunately you have to change both routers). I'd get the cheapest router with gigabit ports, in that case I thought a TP-Link Archer C1200 would be nice (or find with the word "Gigabit Router").

Humor me, as you should do.

Unless you're using mesh topology, o don't think you can get a same connection with different router

What are the speed in the first floor?

Wifi, especially uf you're far From it cannot do it's maximum rated speed plus the fact isp is sometimes not delivering the 100mbps all the time constantly

Yes, on the 2nd router:

  • setup the wifi the same way as it was done on the 1st router
  • give it a static ip in the same range as the 1st routers network, but make sure its not within the dhcp range
  • disable dhcp server
  • plug in cable coming from 1st router into one of the LAN ports
