I was just thinking...when will something surpass the usefulness and reliability of phone calling? Or will something surpass it?

As a truck driver, I use my phone all the time to talk to my wife, kids, friends, shippers/receivers....etc....

And as for texts, I ignore them.  If they need to speak to me, they call.  Texting/talking while driving is dangerous. Seen to many fatal accidents caused by it.

For people I can that use iPhones, I have my favorite set as FaceTime audio. Functions the same (though higher audio quality), but I do it because it's end to end encrypted.

My partner had a hold put on her credit card, mainly because she was crossing the pacific in a warship ordering Uber Eats at different ports across the world while occasionally also sending things to my place.  The ships sat phone was the only way could contact customer service to remove the block.

(The ship has open wifi in some places now, so we mostly use VOIP for voice calls [3 second lag on a VOIP call, woooo, sat internet sucsk], but that only recently became an option, like maybe late 2020.  We'd only have sat calls and email before that point)

Do the Ahmish have sat phones?   Does a Inupiat village on the North Slope reachable only by sea or dog sled have  a sat phone in every house?   How about calling someone in Siberia or isolated villages in southern Africa or South America?

One might also mention star link, but that is not complete and not cheap and satellite internet has a less than stellar history.

The military had the internet before anyone didn't change the world until it was ubiquitous... as common and universal as air... or the plain old telephone.   Fiber and only fiber to every home will really make the POTS network obsolete.   Fiber is ... the end all be all of IP networking.
