Dropbox Knows When You’re Sharing Copyrighted Stuff (Without Actually Looking At Your Stuff)

PyroDonkey

Dropbox has an automatic system in place to handle copyright material that is being shared on Dropbox accounts.

Official statement from Dropbox at the bottom of the article.

There have been some questions around how we handle copyright notices. We sometimes receive DMCA notices to remove links on copyright grounds. When we receive these, we process them according to the law and disable the identified link. We have an automated system that then prevents other users from sharing the identical material using another Dropbox link. This is done by comparing file hashes. We don’t look at the files in your private folders and are committed to keeping your stuff safe.”

Aside from being required to disable the identified link regardless of whether or not it is infringing something.

Stil, I would rather use mega. Don't really trust Dropbox, though if I wanted, i could easily turn my Nas into cloud storage.

I hardly trust the safety of my personal NAS/cloud, you can't beat offline thumb drive transfer. Still it's useful for useless school or work documents that you want to be able to access anywhere. I actually hope they take the time out of their days to open up and read my thoughts on the @%!$ing Blizzara spell God keeps casting on the northern US at the end of March.

I use dropbox as a backup though, so if they went through and deleted all of my music I'd be pissed, I'm not sharing those links, and I don't intend to, I just needed a stable form of storage that I could access from any device I own.
