So I built an abomination. What cheap material should I use to make the case?

I see wood being mentioned. With the current cost of lumber I might suggest 24 karat gold. Might be cheaper.

In that case you can better go for Lego which is better as Dulpo might be too big.

 

Go for Lego technic, as those are parts with Pre-made holes, allowing you to more easily mount it

Paper mache' made out of old egg cartons is the only viable method.   Just make a wire frame of your case, then cover in paper mache'.

Get one of those form fitting inflatable bubble wrap things they put inside computer cases, and let it expand around the motherboard. Airbag computer, impervious to damaage.
