The Linux 3.14 Kernel Will Likely Be Released Today

Linus said last week when releasing Linux 3.14-rc8 that he anticipated to do the official release next. This week has been fairly calm on the Linux kernel mailing list and with Git activity, so it's widely anticipated that 3.14 will be out today or perhaps tomorrow... This week was also the 2014 Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit that made kernel development slow down a bit as well.

The Linux 3.14 kernel is codenamed the Shuffling Zombie Juror (contrary to some wanting the Linux 3.14 codename to deal with Pi) and is packing many exciting features. If you didn't yet read it, be sure to read about our top changes of the Linux 3.14 kernel

Expect some improvements on graphics front on Linux. For more details check out the article at Phoronix : http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTY0ODA

The hardware tech community didn't care about Linux for the longest time and saw it as this alien thing.

Now kernel and OpenGL updates are a big deal. :,)

I'm so happy to see this shift away from "Windows and only Windows for gaming" not just from Valve and alike but from within our community.

Yeah, there is a new major release every couple of months or whenever linus feel like, not really news.

It's certainly more relevant than hearing the 1,323 reaction to Facebook buys Oculus rift: breaking news John Carmack just farted! 12,000 word essay about the implications of said fart on VR technology coming soon!

I don't really believe that many people even care about VR, they're just mad Facebook is getting more (business) ass than what they are.

Yeah, there is a new major release every couple of months or whenever linus feel like, not really news.

So when Nvidia launches their newer drivers then that is news and when the base of Linux, it's Kernel which by the way is running most of the supercomputers and probably this website launches is not a news.

I can agree that this is not as significant as Nvidia's newer drivers, at least for gamers, but this is certainly some news and is worth being shared.

Some legitimately do i.e. while I admit it was entertaining and hilarious, the last WAN show with Slick delivering a staggering amount of mostly pointless speculation and info was possibly the geekiest moment in Linus Tech Tips ever.

Well, to be honest i think that less of 5% of this forum cares about the linux kernel releases.

But hey, do you also pretend to post the weekly RC releases?

Signatures are stupid.

Of course No!, this is important because it is not a RC release and it is a final release.

And LOL yeah! Signatures are stupid ;)

Unfair, a larger percentage cares about Steam OS and this directly relates to it.

Well.. it would take a long time for Debian Stable to include 3.14 Kernel. The previous stable is still stuck at version 3.2 and SteamOS is based on Debian Stable, so this in no way relates to SteamOS, but yes, it does relate to Linux gamers and I am included in that.

For the purposes of other packages I think they would leave it alone but if it comes to offering raw performance upgrades they might break the mold and adopt the kernel.

Yeah! Probably, but I would still wait for an official announcement by Valve. SteamOS is still in beta after all and it is a lot stable already.

Arch Linux should get it pretty soon then. Already on 3.13.7 iirc.

This version of the kernel will not make it into Ubuntu 14.04 as we have already seen the kernel freeze for development and the final beta images are out with the release set to be fully released as stable on the 17th of April. There is still a slight chance it could make it in.

With the way the drivers made by nVidia are produced their performance probably won't change at all. The open source driver stack is directly tied to the kernel because the power management, among other features, is part of the kernel. However, the nVidia drivers are kernel modules that run alongside, but not directly tied, to the kernel meaning there is more flexibility to the application of the drivers as long as they support newer kernel versions.

Yes, it probably won't make it into 14.04 but there will be people who would manually update their kernel. I am one of them.

One of the advantages of being on Arch. I will be getting a new Hard Disk exclusively for using Arch. I will probably use LXDE or KDE with it. Whatever suits me better. I yet have to give KDE a try, but it looks good.

It's sooo good we are starting to see a jump from windows in gaming.  I find linux so much nicer, and if i didn't have to dual boot??? That would be fucking awesome!!!

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

I have ditched WIndows completely, but Yes, I miss some of the Windows games a lot, but Linux game library is getting better. Also many Windows games like the whole GTA series works well under Wine. I am currently playing GTA III and it just works.

Guess we will have to wait for the first update ISO to roll out, which will most likely include the 3.14 kernel.

Found the 3.14 kernel for Ubuntu and here is how to get it.

Ubuntu 14.04 32-bit

cd /tmpwget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14-trusty/linux-image-3.14.0-031400-generic_3.14.0-031400.201403310035_i386.deb

Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit

cd /tmpwget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14-trusty/linux-image-3.14.0-031400-generic_3.14.0-031400.201403310035_amd64.deb

Install

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.14*.deb

I just installed it on a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit Beta 2 on VMware and all seems to be well. I can say Ubuntu 14.04 boots a slight bit faster with the 3.14 kernel.
