Is it possible to hookup 2 2.1 speaker systems together?

Easiest way to do it is just to have cable splitter for the input whether be rca, standard 3.5mm or even 1/4" trs

Why not buy a 5.1 surround sound system for the price?

Aside from movies and games, almost nothing is mixed in surround. Also, THX rating doesn't really mean very much. It's mostly just marketing. There is really crappy equipment that is THX certified, and very good equipment that is not.

Well I am happy and they sound amazing. It sounds like I am getting SS through movies and shows through streaming services such as Netflix

It probably feels that way because you're simply getting sound from more speakers. You're still just splitting 2.1 stereo sound however, so by definition you're not hearing actual surround sound.

That said, you are the one that needs to listen to it and if it sounds good to you then that's all that matters.
