PSU for 3090

celerystruct

I currently have the seasonic USA prime 750W 80+titanium power supply. Would it be enough to power the 3090? My rig also has a 5900x in it. I won't be overclocking either of those, maybe undervolt the gpu though.

I wouldn't risk it, but you will PROBABLY be fine. I would recommend a 1000w.

It should be fine

I'd worry about it if you're running into blackouts, but if you're not, then sure

Undervolting the GPU would definitely help

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Should be fine, even the power hungry 11900k will work with that.

Don't think so.  But you already have it, so it's not going to hurt to try.  It'll just shut down.

That's more than enough power.

You can check out power consumption specs on the gamers nexus YouTube channel.

Not really? 3090 can easily trip a 750w power supply. It's iffy at best.

The 3090 draws about 350w and the 5900x draws about 150w.

That still leaves plenty of headroom.

It's basically the same thing as what you already have but 1kW, with DBB fans (better, arguably) and worse heatsinks. No, not for this price. Wait, it's Strix, so it's Focus, not Prime, even more so not worth it lol.

Edit: damn, looking at the PCPP and 1kW PSUs are hella expensive nowadays ... I'd pick out of these three :

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/d7dxFT/antec-high-current-gamer-extreme-1000w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-hcg1000-extreme

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/GH9tt6/thermaltake-toughpower-irgb-plus-1000-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ps-tpi-1000f3fdgu-1

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VrrmP6/be-quiet-straight-power-11-1000w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-bn285

Antec is yet another Seasonic but should actually work, both because it's Focus and 1kW (wait, it's Prime dammit ... but yeah, 1kW should work). Thermaltake is a good PSU from CWT but it could be a little on the loud side, Antec probably too tho. So if you want a quiet PSU then be quiet, a bonus is that it also has single-ended cables, so since you'd need two/three separate cables for RTX3090 anyway, there would be less wires dangling around.

Might I suggest this? SilverStone SX 1000 Platinum, it cost a little more than the ROG PSU (which, to me, is just banging on the Asus ROG label/moniker and nothing more). Why is the link so long compared to the ones above? Because it's from Amazon?

So why they should go for a PSU with zero reviews on, SFX PSU which is most likely would be noisy as hell and they'll need SFX-ATX bracket to mount it, which is also more expensive than other options ?

I didn't have an intention to be untactful, i was simply asking a question. That PSU has absolutely zero reviews on it, not even a teardown, so it's a Pandora's box, which is also more expensive than even that ASUS PSU which is already overpriced, why buy it ?

I'm thinking the Be Quiet one would be nice. It's on the tier list as A and it's seems to be the one of the more reasonably priced one.

So a 1000w psu will guarantee that there won't be any problems with the 3090 right? Does it matter if it's multi-rail or single? Is there one that's preferred over the other?

For a high wattage PSU, multi-rail is safer for the components, since there's a lower current limit for each rail.  I.e. you're not getting all 1000-1100 Watts through some potentially shorted component.

750W PSU is Actually Enough to fire up your Ryzen 9 5900x with RTX 3090 (Also 80+ Titanium is a thing), Even without any Undervolting i would say that your PC is gonna running fine. But for more Future Proofing you can upgrade it to 1000+ watt PSU

Here is my Calculation with those Component (Assuming you got a 64 Gigs of Ram, Overkill Storage. a Whole set of Gaming Peripherals) https://outervision.com/b/1Y2SY6

That still leaves plenty of headroom.

You're forgetting spikes, other components, and a lot of other stuff. Its cutting it really close.

By your logic a 500w psu would run this, which is funny

I never said a 500w power supply would power that system. Obviously I understand you need a little headroom and there are also other components in the build which require power.

Op was wondering if 750w can handle it, and I answered that yes, it can. I stand by that.

You shouldn't run into power issues unless you were overclocking your parts, which the Op mentioned they won't be doing.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with anything as it's an efficiency rating and has nothing to do with output capability.

Tell that to Silverstone SX-LTI, Strider Titanium, Thermaltake Toughpower DPS G Titanium 1500W. It's almost as if OEMs can make efficient PSUs that are also not good.
