xCloud iOS and PC Beta Official Launch tomorrow

The official beta for xCloud on iOS and PC begins tomorrow with select Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members being able top test the Xbox Cloud Gaming limited beta.

Starting tomorrow, we’ll begin sending out invites to select Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to start testing the Xbox Cloud Gaming limited beta for Windows 10 PCs and Apple phones and tablets via web browsers. We’re launching xbox.com/play where invitees can play over 100 Xbox Game Pass titles through Edge, Google Chrome, or Safari. My thoughts

This is a great piece of news for those of you with an iOS device that can't wait for xcloud as the beta wasn't predicted to start for another 6 months. With Linus's latest video about gpus being in limited sotck and game streaming being an option for waiting this is great news as many of us a week ago were messing around with the hidden beta when the codes got retracted and now it looks like we can go at it again if the codes end up being a universal thing or not one time use.

Why does Apple allow this and not Geforce now and Steam in home streaming?

I presume that this is currently limited to mobile and tablet at this point in time so that could be why its allowed

It's the same deal as with GeForce Now, web browser(Safari) only.  The main limitation of this solution that Nvidia's using right now is that it's controller only(no keyboard and mouse support) and increased latency(way more latency on my iPad vs on my PC on the same network).  If memory serves, this is also the same way Stadia is handling their service on Apple devices right now.

I think Apple's excuse for allowing steam link on their app store is that it isn't cloud streaming, it's streaming from a local computer.  As for why they don't allow cloud streaming apps on their devices... your guess is as good as mine.

 

There have been rumors that Apple is trying to make a push into gaming and wants to make their own cloud gaming service.  Personally, I don't buy that excuse since it would open Apple up to even more anti-trust lawsuits than they already have going for them.  I think the more realistic motive here is that they don't like the idea of a service that offers a selection of games that doesn't go through their app store(meaning they don't get a cut of the profit). They've been very open in how critical they are of the idea of alternative app stores on iOS and I believe this is actually a key demand of Epic Games in their lawsuit against Apple.  I think Apple allowing these services to use Safari is a way of them opening their gates to these companies through an inefficient method and in the long term they want to force them to switch to a real app because of all the downsides of using Safari.

 

Ultimately I'm interested in seeing how latency will be through this method for GamePass. If it's as bad as GeForce Now is for me(games that require good reflexes are basically unplayable), then I think Microsoft just might make a deal with Apple just to get a real app.

Arch is better than Ubuntu. Fight me peko.
