How does the gallery function work and can I upload videos there?

You mean the gallery on this forum? It's here: https://linustechtips.com/gallery/

You can upload videos/images there to embed on the forum for example.

I used it in the past for embedding images I shared here, but nowadays I just use the attachment option (drag a file to a post/paste a image)

Yes, these are the accepted file types:
