Post Your Computing Legacy/History/Upgrade Path!

keoghjacob

I have no idea of the dates, it's been too long.

Probably around 1988 I build a 8088 PC with scraps from my Dad's work.

Then somewhere in the early 90s my Dad bought me a 386 processor and motherboard.

I sold that and got a 486.

I sold that and got a faster 486.

I sold that and got a Pentium.

I sold that and got a faster Pentium

I sold that and got a Pentium with MMX

I sold that and got an Athlon.

I sold that right away and got a Pentium II

I sold that and got a faster Pentium II

I sold that and got a Pentium III, Slot 1

I sold that and got a Pentium III, socket 370 and 750 MHz.

I sold that and got a Pentium III, of 1.1 GHz.

I sold that and got a Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz.

I sold that and got a Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz with HT.

I sold that and got a Pentium Dual Core.

I sold that and got another Pentium Dual Core.

I sold that and got a first gen i3 processor.

I sold that and got a 2nd gen i5, can't remember which model.

I sold that and got a 3570, that I am using right now.

Pretty sure I am missing a bunch though.

For laptops I had a Pentium Dual core, a first gen i3, a 2nd gen i3, and currently a 3rd gen i5.

So your dad really got something you didn't need to pay for, then you sold it, next year something came out and bought that but sold that again and it goes to a infinite circle without losing your money? how many people did you rob son?

Why are you so obssesed with overclocking?

its like gaming but more fun. i don't like things to go so. i always want to make them faster, more powerful and louder.  :P  i have the same problem with everything, if its still working, it ain't fast enough.

Probably less people than you have.

Windows 3.1 did not run in a 8088, so the 386 WAS necessary.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

199X-200X- My parents both had first generation iMacs that my brother, sister and I played on A LOT. We mostly played on my mother's, because Dad used his for work.

Late 2004-late 2012- I had this Dell computer that came with a Celeron D 2.53 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, a 70 GB hard drive, Windows XP, and probably integrated graphics. I did another gig of RAM to it a while back as well. Oh, how I loved you...

Late 2012-Now-iBuyPower 687i that came with an FX-6100, 8 GB of RAM, a 1 TB HDD, a Powercolor Radeon HD 6670, and Windows 8.1. (The 6670 is now upgraded to an ASUS R9 270).

I won't go into detail about all the different computers my Mom, Dad, brother, sister, and grandparents have owned, because it's something in the realm of 10-15. Maybe more.

Why is the God of Hyperdeath SO...DARN...CUTE!?

Also, if anyone has their mind corrupted by an anthropomorphic black latex bat, please let me know. I would like to join you.

I'm planning to do the same thing, the cheapest model of the laptop, that is EXACTLY THE SAME then the most expensive model here in croatia has a differential value of 1700 kuna! (300 dollars) So i sell this laptop for 360 dollars, buy a laptop for 360 dollars, and sell that laptop for 460 dollars, lol, way to earn a money, R9 270X, IM COMING FOR YOU.

I havent broken anything by overclocking it yet 98% of things that break are doa.

My 660 was folding at stock for 25 hours. I came home to start ocing it and it was already dead.

My first msi mpower board was doa, it never posted

My first be quiet psu was doa.

My first lightning was oced on a stock bios without extra voltage. Then i put it back a bit to start testing it for memory speed vs clock speed in heaven 4.0 it started artifacting really badly on the first stage which was 50mhz on the core when i had previously had it at over 100mhz perfectly fine. Its a very common problem with the last batch of lightnings to have a faulty memory controller.

Second lightning did not display anything.

I thought the fx6200 was dead but Priller got it running again.

2000 - 2004 Random desktop my dad built for me with a Pentium 4 and a 32MB Nvidia GPU, it was good enough for Runescape at the time

2004 - 2005 Cheap Compaq laptop because I wanted a computer in my room, the desktop got phased out around this time

2005 - 2006 Really dumb HP laptop with something like a Nvidia 6150 inside of it, jesus it was crappy as hell, could barely play Halo: CE

2006 - 2009 Alienware Area 51 m9750, my first real gaming system.  Core 2 Duo, 8800GT's in SLI, and 3GB of RAM.  And it ran on Vista aw yeah, and man did it run hot.

Now we get into desktop territory

2009 - 2011 Alienware Aurora R2, yes a prebuilt, blasphemy.  i7 920 and an HD5870.  The case was cool, but largely impractical, it literally had 2 fans, so everything ran hot.  Later replaced the 5870 with a GTX 570.

During this period, the old Alienware laptop fried the motherboard, so good thing I bought the desktop

2011 - 2013 My first built rig

Intel i5 2500k, Sabertooth P67, 8GB RAM, and the GTX 570.  All encased in a Coolermaster HAF 922, it got real dusty inside since for some reason, there's no dustfilter on the front fan.  Cooled by CM fans, a Corsair H50, and powered by a Coolermaster Gold 850w PSU

February 2012: upgrade to a GTX 680 SC Signature, I have a fondness for reference cards

2013 - present My current rig

Intel i5 4670k, Asus Maximus VI Hero, 16GB RAM, and the GTX 680.  Cooled by bequiet fans, a bequiet Dark Rock Pro 2, and powered by a bequiet Dark Power Pro 850w which was $40 off.

It wasn't much of an upgrade, but I really just wanted to have a new case that was free of any sort of liquid cooling, very quiet, and dust free.

Plans for the future: I'm looking to replace my 680, but something just tells me I shouldn't jump the gun on anything Kepler at the moment, I think the rest of my parts will be good for the next few years and the only other computer things I would probably buy would be peripherals.
