Does Windows Update frustrate anyone else?

Title. Seriously.

My computer updates itself seemingly every time I shut it down. Yet today while installing some software I get an error stating "You are running a version of Windows older than 2004."

That's... Odd? I just reinstalled Windows last month. All my Windows Update settings were left at the defaults. And yet somehow I was on version 1903.

Windows Update just says "Restart pending" for an update to 20H2.

???

You literally shut down every single day. At most every 2 days. Am I missing something here? Am I just being dumb, and you have to manually initiate version updates?

As I type this I've been sitting here for 40 minutes waiting for this series of updates to complete. Whee.

You most likely installed an older version of Windows and it's pretty typical to get many updates when you do that. That's why I always create a fresh install media using the W10 tool so I don't have to wait hours to get dozens of updates on an old version of Windows.

I actually used the "Reset this PC" function in Control Panel. So I guess I've been running 1903 since... Well, since it was current. I'm still lost as to why it never updated in the years I had it installed.

I wish it would have at this point. I've been having performance issues for months. Wonder if being multiple versions behind was the culprit... Lol

Weird, I could easily disable windows updates on my system, only issues is, disable means destroy so the Windows update function just gives errors when you try to check for updates yourself, so if you want to update you'll need to reinstall windows itself to fix it. Maybe there's another way but I haven't found one yet. Though Windows Update hasn't really bothered me lately at all so I don't feel the need to disable it.

YES!

Especially with my work computer...it's like everytime I boot, it nags me about yet another update.

well sounds you have pro version?  I actually managed to postpone updates with that for about 6 months without it nagging me about it.

But last time it was 5 months so he actually broke the contract we've made (i triple checked to be sure).

So I renamed him, he's called update orchestrator_backup now. I like this new one a lot more,  he always sleeps and when I ask him how it's going he just mumbles <read error description failed>

Yup. I've never actually had to postpone updates on either PC though, it just never bothers asking me. Once in a blue moon I'll remote into my server and it'll pop up with a notification telling me that updates are waiting, but it never goes father than that.

I thought that's the reason why people get pro version... but they nerfed it pretty hard it used to be up to one year, it's now 6 months and the option was removed from settings too, you now have to do it in "group policy".

I recently upgraded to new pc. The first update broke my user account which i couldnt log into anymore. It always signed me into a temporrary account and there was no way to fix it. So i had to reinstall again.

Straight up deactivated updates since then.

Honestly, I only have Pro because it was only $10 more than Home when I bought it in store... Good to know, though!

Not that much more for a grey market key, and it allows me to RDP into it when I'm too lazy to get out of bed to change something. I think that and the GPEditor are the only Pro features I use.

I set my computer to a metered connection, well my ISP does have a cap in all. I periodically just check for updates. I just updated to 2004, like yesterday. I don’t trust any of the major updates for Windows these days. I only updated to continue getting patches. Outside of that I wait till the software is unsupported to update. Ensures they have all the bugs worked out.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
