Possible closure of PSP, PS3 and PS Vita digital stores in next few months

Summary

According to a familiar source for TheGamer, the digital stores for the PS3, PS Vita and the PSP, will shutdown around July. An announcement is apparently being planned for the end of March. Chances are that the physical copies of games that are currently also available on the digital markets, will increase in prices once their digital counterpart will no longer be able to get downloaded.

If you own any of the three consoles and you’ve always wanted to download a specific game, now is the time. No doubt the price of physical games will jump up once the stores cease to exist.

Personal opinion:

This kind of comes out of nowhere, especially for the PS Vita which is the more recent console out of the 3 mentioned. It’s worth noting that some of the games that are solely available digitally will be ‘difficult’ to preserve due to copyright most likely.

I doubt they're making any real cash off of these stores and they're probably not making enough to justify the server costs.  Plus the older a system is the harder it is to maintain it, especially when you're dealing with hardware that's older than some of the people on this forum.

 

What I'm more concerned about is what this means for PS3 emulation on the PS5.  It's a well documented fact that the cell architecture the PS3 uses is difficult to emulate from both a software and hardware perspective (the work the RPCS3 team has done is phenomenal in spite of this) so it was a given that it would take Sony a significant amount of time to get it running (not necessarily well) on the PS5.  But what about the hundreds of games that were exclusive to the digital store?  How will gamers be able to play those games on their PS5s if a version doesn't exist on the PS4/5 store?  Plus, sunlighting their last-last gen digital services without having a real alternative on current gen (is it current gen if nobody can buy one?) doesn't instill me with confidence that they're working on PS3 emulation.  Say what you will about Xbox, but at least you can download (some) 360 games and play those on current gen.

Arch is better than Ubuntu. Fight me peko.

It's also why I put 'possible' in the title as it's still unconfirmed. Still, it wouldn't really surprise me if it was true.

Just FYI, the emulators figured out a way around this ages ago.

 

Since the PS4 is still a supported device, expect the PS4 store to be changed so that no backwards compatibility with anything will be possible and likewise the PS5. Like this might have already been the case, I don't have a PS3 PS4 or PS5.

 

With that said, since  most games for PS4 and PS5 are ending up on the PC as native games anyway, there really is no reason to get too upset about it. I'm also completely expecting Sony to turn around and add more previously published games to the "Playstation Now" service.
