Because they're easier to get, cheaper to get than ASICS. They also have more relative resell value than ASICS.

View it like buying a Toyota car with plans to resell within a few years or buying a Mercedes with the same plan. Toyota does the job really well for what you pay and holds it's price longer.

IT SUCKS thae market is killing me with these over insane prices , do you know a good GPU for cheap nowadays? ( by cheap i mean 100-200 usd )

there are cards that exist for GPU mining only

under $200 USD, you just have to check and see what's available. Used local markets like fb market would be worth a glance

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

There are cards just for crypto mining - the HX or CMP cards.

Part of a miner's plan is to resell their GPUs for people to game on them, though, and since the CMP/HX cards don't have display outputs and can't be used for gaming, they're mostly worthless for reselling value.

"why cant there be a card JUST for crypto mining" - there is. The p106 & such. A 1070-1070 ti equivalent can be had *near* that range. What games are you thinking of playing on it? Check your local used markets for anything that interests you.

There are machines for mining that are far more profitable than using GPU's but cost a lot more and are worthless when the next generation is release. GPU's are cheaper and can be resold second hand to recoup a large amount of the capitol.

New cards you'll be looking for a GTX 16 series card anything but the standard GTX 1650 shouldn't disappoint.

Used your options are low end GTX 970, RX 470, RX 570 & mid range GTX 980 ti, GTX 1070 or RX 580 8GB

The 30HX just dropped....At $740 USD. For $740 it's slower than a locked down 3060 while using barely less power and having no resale value.

Buy a card that pays off in 11 months or so and have ewaste, or buy a card for half the price that pays it's self off much quicker and can still be resold after?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

It's called an ASIC and they're very expensive and always out of stock.

Also they need to be specifically designed for each type of currency.

Well, a GPU is meant to be used for anything, not only games.

You mean gaming graphics cards? Because mining specific cards (not talking about the new Nvidia CMP stuff, but the older ones that are gaming cards minus display outputs) don't end up being any cheaper than gaming cards. At the same time they bare the problem of poor resale value and market.

but seriously the biggest problem is production numbers of dies. Mining cards are still made with the same dies physically and still competes with gaming cards for stock. Nvidia's marketing dept may want to prioritize gaming card production for marketing reasons, but in terms of doing business miners are way more willing to give Nvidia large amounts of money. In the time of tight supply especially, focusing on a market that gives less revenue is not a convincing argument.

Also if you're wanting an Nvidia card, lack of competition because AMD's supply problem is even worse.
