Need some help replacing subwoofer

I don't know much about this audio stuff so i need some advice before i make the wrong choice.

almost 10 years ago i bought the Onkyo HT-S9405THX 5.1 speaker system. Just outside of the warranty (obviously) the receiver died. I've since replaced it again and am now running an Onkyo TX-NR696. For about 2 years now every now and then the sub just stops doing anything. Makes no noise what so ever. I've done some things to make it work again, like turning it off and unplugging it for like half a day, fiddle with the cable.. stuff like that. It used to make it work again for some time until i touched the damn thing and then it would immediately make less noise or just stop working again. Which happened again today, really sick of it now so i want a new sub.

But i have no idea what to look for or whats good to replace it with. Can i just replace it with anything? I do plan to replace the rest of the set as well, so maybe this can be the start of it. So i hope someone here can make some good suggestions of what to go with. Don't really have a budget in mind. $550 for a sub seems fine i guess, if it doesn't just blow all the other speakers away, don't even know if it works like that :P. so please help lol

I personally have used car subwoofers and amps to great success when reasonably priced studio or theatre subs weren't available and at the moment use a modified Velodyne studio sub (replaced 10' speaker with a 12' driver because why not) so I'm probably not the best person to talk here unless you also appreciate Jank but there are always options. See if you can get a decent powered sub in your price range, if they end up sucking car subs can have surprisingly decent sound quality.....

The receiver doesn't have a amplified subwoofer so you have to buy a sub with its own power supply so it doesn't matter what sub you get, just plug it into "pre out subwoofer" ports

Yeah i realized it was just that. But when you search for just a sub you often see multiple connectors on them and for a sound pleb like me its a bit confusing. Does that work on my receiver? Where do i plug it in? Do i need to use all the connectors on there? Why don't they all just use 1 plug like my old one? 😛 But i guess its like PC's... everyone wants to be the standard so there's lots of them.

anyway, i bought a Klipsch R-120, just got delivered and works so i'm happy again. Shook the house a bit at first so had to turn it down a lot lol, but all good now XD
