A couple floatplane questions

hammy

I preface this with saying that floatplane could literally produce 0 content and I'd still subscribe, I just like supporting LTT/Luke. But, I have a few questions when looking at the site in general:

  1. How is floatplane doing in general? I don't see a strong push around LTT to add more creators, is this intentional?
  2. Is LTT no longer posting "Vessel-Style" timed exclusive content (I want to say Vessel used to have about a week/2week buffer ahead of youtube)? If so, what is the pitch for people to subscribe to Floatplane beyond better quality?
  3. With that exclusive content being the main draw of Floatplane, is there a reason that exclusive content isn't more bolded and highlighted on the site? There's probably a more elegant UI way to do this, but I think having differing colored video borders, or perhaps like a gold border around exclusive/timed exclusive videos with text that reads that makes a lot of sense.

I think Floatplane is a really neat concept, and I think a lot of other creators are catching on to similar concepts (curiosity stream and others). I think it's being a touch under-utilized/under-advertised by LTT.

I agree with this sentiment.

I want (and have) the money to support LTT and other creators, but i don't see the value in Floatplane for what most creators are asking, and per creator, each with their own different offerings and prices?

It's really hard to determine the value of offerings on Floatplane.

If i can't figure out the value of the offering(s), i won't spend money just to spend money. That's how you end up with no money.

  1. Pretty sure its still in beta, but not invitation based anymore. More like application base as in any creator could sign up. So not bad, but still ways to go for mass launch.
  2. There's 7 days* early-access for most of the content. Some exclusive stuff, mainly short vlogs and test footage.
  3. With LMG subscription you get all LMG main channels, downloadable, 1080p with base level, exclusive BTS footage, livestreams with own chat (not exclusive), some early-access promotions to LTTStore.com.

So its pretty much like Patreon, but with integrated video function. No, you don't get all-inclusive like with Vessel. Its pay-per-creator.

*) While its advertised as 7-days, its actually something from 0 days to 2 months.

I think the reason why they don't really talk that much about exclusive stuff on WAN Show is all the butthurt people. Pretty much anytime this subject comes up, there are people who are so entitled of receiving their free content, they just have to hate.

The truth is the streaming platform space is extremely crowded and what makes sense to serve the fans of LMG and its close collaborators might not make sense to try to expand more broadly right now - or maybe ever.

The idea behind floatplane was always that it'll either soar or float. It seems like it's more floating at this point, and we're okay with that.

The main value proposition for our viewers is that they get early access (usually), DRM-free downloads, and exclusive behind the scenes content. Some (like you) would support us even without any of those things, but we want to make sure we're giving something that we think has a lot of value in return 🙂

Floatplane definitely gets the best look into our inner workings.

Oh dang, I didn't respect a reply from the god bod @LinusTech. Thanks for taking the time! Reading back I came off a bit more antagonistic than I meant, I was truly just curious. As an unsolicited suggestion, I truly would love to see videos more clearly highlighted that are floatplane exclusive (or timed exclusives) as it just makes my life easier when scanning over content I might've already caught on YouTube.

I know you met approximately 10,000 people at LTX 2019, and I was one of them. We chatted for about 30 seconds about starting my own case company and how I would absolutely destroy you at scrapyard wars (still true). Been working on an LLC, meeting with vendors, finding parts, and testing designs for the past year, and my first case is coming out in a few months, so just thank you for the inspiration and the encouragement, it meant a lot.

Wow good for you. I wish you the best of luck. It's an extremely competitive space, but it's still possible to innovate and make money if you've got the stuff!

Most exclusives have "FP Exclusive" in title. As for early-access ones, its takes bit too much time and effort to go around, and I think making it automated for the new people joining is bit too much of work for gains. As of now, there are 3 LTT videos not released on YT. Adding 3 FP Exclusive videos, and then video for the other channels.
