CPU Defect?

To the questions about any damages on package or the cpu pins etc, no there was absolutely no damage and it was brand new and sealed box. I also want to clarify that there are two small pieces of metal that are attached to the top of the CPU's IHS. I also did contact "Amazon" whom I purchased it from and they would accept a return and exchange however it's the fact that it would take 1-2 weeks to return and receive the replacement...If they even have it in stock when I go to process a claim. My biggest problem is downtime of returning it and replacing it. I just wanted to see if anyone here had any idea on if I should just take a file or some type of tool to try to remove the two small bits on it (obviously being extremely careful to not damage any pins etc).
Thank you all for your replies!

Filing those 2 markings down would absolutely void your warranty with AMD similar to how Lapping does as well. Just bid your time and do the return/replace process with Amazon.

Hello,  I recently bought an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 to use in a computer I was building for guests at my home.  However upon looking at the IHS I found two small chips of metal on the top which keeps the CPU Cooler from sitting flat on the CPU which creates a large gap of air.  I just bought it from Amazon and there only help is for me to send it out and then they'll send the replacement out which would mean another 1-2 weeks until I h could get the computer running.  I am looking to see if anyone has dealt with this type of manufacturing defect and how they fixed it? I'll attach the photos I was able to take... Please be kind I'm not a photographer!

The two red circles are the two defects in the IHS, the top one is much larger than the bottom one.

Thanks for your help,

 -Rocky

i would suggest asking the retailer you bought it from this question, if they say it's okay and it turns out to be broken then you can quote them on saying that it should work and you can get a replacement.

if they say it's not okay then you've bought a chip they don't belive is capable of running your system then they're gonna have to give you a replacement otherwise they've sold you wares that won't work

Anything i've written between the * and * is not meant to be taken seriously.

keep in mind that helping with problems is hard if you aren't specific and detailed.

i'm also not a professional, (yet) so make sure to personally verify important information as i could be wrong.

Was it new&sealed? Or sold as open-box? Those look like something that has happened after/during install. If its was sold as new&sealed, then it is worth of returning. That kind of damage isn't really game-breaking, though. Your thermal paste's purpose is to fill small defects left by aluminium being weak metal overall.

Looks like someone dropped a screwdriver or something on it. I would return it. If you can't return it then take a file and file it down as flat as you can, then use a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface to sand it down flat. This will void your warranty though.

download this: https://www.aida64.com/downloads

and this: https://www.mersenne.org/download/

rund first the aida stress test

And while it is running also start prime 95 such as this

your computer will be a little unresponsive but that's expected

leave it like this for as much as possible/convenient for you (1 full day would be ideal but if you cant, run it for at least a couple of hours)

open the taskmanager to ensure that during that all cores seem active at near 100%

If all cores are at 100% and nothing happened (e.g blue screen of death or a sudden restart ) then you can use your CPU

The marks are no actual damage they indicate though that the CPU might have fallen which may have resulted in a crack (which means your computer isnt even going to boot) or a very minute defect (and that's why I suggest to you to run the tests)

if everything is alright feel free to use it if you dont want to replace it, having said that I would lap any pieces of metal that may extrude so that I wont damage/scratch my cpu cooler when applying it (use your finger if you dont feel any bumps or something pointy scratching it then it probably doesnt need lapping).

This is exactly what it looked like to me, and I don't know if that changes anything regarding the suggestion to "just file it down" but I personally wouldn't do that as it most likely voids your warranty, and even if doesn't (unlikely) this is just a too weird of defect to keep it imo.  yeah it sucks not having a replacement for 2 weeks or so but long term a replacement would be better imo.

of course you can also just try it as is, if it works fine then might be worth keeping, otherwise obviously, return / exchange.
